How best to save International Rules ?

I would love to see a game between GAA and soccer players, lets say the gaa allstars (11 of them :)) v a league of ireland 11. play the whole game as soccer with no offside.

Ta SGoldrick - after me championing the series on the Other Sports forum. You can stick yer idea up yer Aussie....

The Railway Cup series has run it's course. It doesn't attract the interest it had until the 1960's and despite various efforts to promote the games, the public just don't attend.
Games have been shown on TV since the start of RTE, and has increased and improved over the years. Now people can see the leading players regularly on the box. The RCs thrived before all that, when provincial finals were well attended, and gave players from weaker counties, a chance to play in Croke Park on 17th March.

When I was a kid we used to play compromise rules after a game of football. We understood that football had lots of rules (too many steps, no pick up off the ground, no fouling etc) but compromise rules meant you could pick the ball off the ground, punch your opponent and have an all out free for all if you wanted.

Went to an international rules match in Galway before. Whole crowd way roaring for a few slaps to be thrown but none did so it was quite boring and Ireland won. Aussies bet the Irish off the pitch the next week and the whole country was whinging about it and how the game should be scrapped. All out fighting hasn't been removed from the GAA yet so it shouldn't be a stick to beat this sport with.

I agree with s goldrick, I bet half the people on here complaining about the IRS end up watching it anyway. These games provide the world with an insight to how our 'amatuer' game can hold its own against professional athletes and should be viewed as a great advertisement to what we are as an organisation.

all these games do is advertise our players to the aussie rules scouts

Lot of tourists around Dublin on St Patricks Weekend. I'm sure they would watch the railway cup if it was marketed properly.

nobody will go
market it properly are you mad
they dont market the championship until august
they dont market the national league at all
so you hardly expect them to market a game
that had about 300 at it for the last 5 or 6 years

I don't think the international rules is worth saving, let's be honest it was a nice little novelty for a while especially for us Irish to bandy around the well worn phrase 'we beat the Aussies and they're pros you know'. Also half the reason to watch it was for a good row, it was like a modern day colesseum.

But now, with the novelty well worn, our lads training like full time pros and no more fights it ain't worth watching, time to put it to bed.

An obviously bad attempt at humour on my part S Goldrick - no offside - my user name - put the two together.... I'll get my coat.

A handful of players at most made that switch, besides its not like the economy is thriving here. If a young fella can get a few years over there on a decent wage its probably better than what's here, hardly a major issue there.

Good article by Keith Duggan concerning the Rules series in the Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic-games/international-rules-living-on-borrowed-time-1.2001340

I never even found the fights that interesting. If they had wanted to go that route they could always have just put Joe Kernan in charge and let them away with it ;P

Its fair to say the GAA don't market anything properly, but I'm sure you could get 40,000 tourists into Croke Park if they were sold it on St Patricks weekend. The managers of the two teams would have to encourage good football for it to have any chance. Of course it has no chance if not marketed and teams use defensive systems (not sure if you see defensive football as I've never seen a game but if I was in Dublin for the weekend and it was a tenner in, and the kids got in free, I'd take a look at it.

4 or 5 every year are now being handpicked by afl scouts
sheehan cam eto their notice last match in croker and now is too big to play in it according to his club
along with the two other irish guys in the same club
although one of them was able to come home to play for portlaoise

tourists wouldnt be bothered with anything other than the parade on st patricks day
only a handfull of them make their way to the club finals after
their attitude is when in rome
so when in ireland its go to the pub after the parade
ireland promotes itself as leprachauns and alcohol so until you change that mentality
sport will never be what they attracted to when here

the best thing that could happen for the series is a narrow win for australia this weekend in an entertaining game.

To make the IRS game more familiar and played more often - would playing the Inter-Provincials/ Railway Cup under IRS rules as well add spice to the competition, especially if the Ireland team is drawn from provincial performance as just mentioned ?

Omahant now that's an idea that would spark interest alround for both competitions and is definatly the best idea I have heard if both competitions are to be kept going after this year
