Monaghan V Kildare

RE: MonaghanGlory

You could very well be right. I just felt that leading up to the Ulster Final both teams were keenly looking to build traction and momentum for AL series, as both teams are good enough to be there at that the QF stage. Yes, I do agree, the fine line between lifting the Anglo Celt and walking away empty handed is just that; a fine line. However, gaining momentum and traction from that is a powerful thing going forward. Similarly, a win on Saturday for Monaghan gets things going again, no doubt.

8:30PM on Saturday tells its own story.

I think this will be a really good game, I think we are a bit better than some people are giving us credit for, Monaghan are rightly favourites, but I've seen enough of our guys this year to know that when they are at their best they are a team that scores heavily, We will have to be at our best to compete with a very strong and experienced Monaghan but we are capable of what would be the only shock in the last 12 round

Never back teams I support but putting money on Kildare for this one. We're a mad price. 5/1 Half-time/Full-time. Be having some of that.

Didnt O Flaherty play half back ?
I remember when we played them in divison one Kildare had a half back who scored 0-4 , Can anyone tell me if it's him ?

Wow! some surprises there, a more experienced starting 15 than we have seen for a while

MonaghanGlory, Eoghan oFlaherty is corner forward,(although Ryan did play him half back in a couple of games) It was his brother Morgan who used to play half back, not on the panel this year, would be surprised if he scored 4 points from hb wasn't a noted scorer though he did pop up now and again

MonaghanGlory, I stand corrected, Eoghan OFlaherty played half back against Monaghan in Div 2 game in 2012, and scored 5 points, smoe from frees. but he is definitely a forward rather than a back and one of our more consistent scorers

Yeah Eoghan was tried at wing back in a few league games up and down. Definitely a forward though

Is Emmet Bolton being omitted a surprise?

We only play a two man full forward line. O'Flaherty might be named top of the right but he'll be dropping back to half forward with Leper dropping back further. It's kind of an outdated philosophy the two man full forward line in on their own if you ask me but Ryan still persists with it.

Massive reliance on Smith now if they do get isolated as has happened in the past but then O'Connor is a great man for holding it up and feeding the runners and him and and Smith do have a good understanding. Still if we see them miles from everyone else as happened in the league then we're in trouble. If Clarke and McDonnell or Donaghy and the Gooch wouldn't prosper if that happened.

Bit surprised by that team, named a bit earlier than usual too.

I'd have preferred to see McGrillen or Bolton named in the fullback line instead of Foley, or maybe both of them instead of Foley and O'Grady, and two from Brophy, Fogarty and Mulhall in the forwards ahead of Kelly and O'Connor.

O'Connor seems to have much more of an impact on games when he's brought off the bench and if we don't get support in close to him he could be in for a frustrating day. If he's there to try pull Drew Wylie out of position to allow other forwards exploit the space left in behind then it might pay off to some extent.

It gives the impression that we may be looking to start with a more physical team than we have done the last few weeks. Matching, or trying to match Monaghan in a physical contest will be very tough, and if they're looking to drop men back then we'll need to be able to move the ball quickly and accurately into the forwards, something we failed miserably at against Clare with Smith left on his against two or three lads for most of the first half.

I suppose it still leaves us with strong options on the bench; good ball carriers and lads well capable of scoring from distance if tactical changes need to be made.

What you'd give to have Peter Kelly fit for a game like this.

Where's Bolton? Always had him down as a steadying force in the half back line. Is he injured or dropped?

To me that team looks unbalanced at the back. Expecting Monaghan to take it and may even win a shade easily.

Has to be a dummy team by Ryan, would be amazed if that 15 started on Saturday ~PHS

Bolton dropped would be a bit of a surprise, but he hasn't been setting the world alight, could be held back to add impetus when introduced, or he could well start, would expect a few changes to that starting 15

I'm very happy with the changes Ryan has made, to me that's the best possible starting 15 in every way, as for Bolton he's a good attacking h/b but he's slowing a bit and the change was necessary.
There's no room for improvement in the h/f or f/f line. I'm especially happy with the siting of TOC at full forward, I'm confident that if the long ball is pumped into him and the runners give him support he will deliver over the 70 min's.

My views on the match result has changed, so much so that I predict a hard earned Kildare win.

The Tomas O'Connor thing has gone on since 2011. If it wasn't for his form in 2011 it would have long been dispensed with. Truth is, it has never really worked since 2011 and that's a long time ago.

I'm telling you all now Kildare will win this game no doubt in my mind, having watched Monaghan this summer there not as good as I thought and Kildare are not as bad as the Meath game. Kildare will have no fears of Monaghan and are well use to playing in Croker unlike Monaghan who haven't won a championship match in Croker in decades (maybe I'm wrong) so it's Kildare for me.
