Some of the Donegal lads are getting a bit defensive.

Donegal? Overly-defensive? Nah, never...

I think a few midweek games throughout the summer would be an ideal way to accomodate the club players. As Muckross pointed out, these games could be played without county players if needs be. It may mean certain clubs are at a disadvantage but it's a no win situation. Either they play the fixture without their stars or suffer without any football being played.

But, there is also the geographical situation to consider. This is an extreme example, but say when Malin are fixed to play Kilcar in the ACL. You're talking about a 5 hour round trip so obviously that's out for midweek. There would be other fixtures similarly affected.

It really is a tough one to resolve. But pointing the blame at the county manager is not the answer. Jimmy is an intelligent man and there is no way he is that short sighted as to just want short term county success at the overall expense of football in general in Donegal.

Excellent piece by Boyle , hopefully those on here will read and take on board as its from one of their own , as similar comments by Dubs , Lilly whites etc fall on defensive deaf ears , the piece written could apply to many counties the length and breath of the country , in Dublin a dual county we at least will have league games , but last year our championship was reduced to a glorified blitz played out over a ridiculous short period and if we are successful again club players can expect the same treatment .
One of the suggestions of Boyle in article is about club players forming a commitee/organisation etc to take control of their own destiny , I feel he is onto something there , I have been very vocal in my dissatisfaction of the GPA with regards to club dealings , they DO NOT represent rank and file , truth is no one does , hence lack of a voice , lack of influence .

Damo,
Don't get us wrong. None of us are saying that the situation is satisfactory, far from it. But the title of the thread "Donegal GAA; Dictatorship", with no prizes for guessing who the dictator is, was guaranteed to get a response especially when it didn't tally with the facts.
With some posters asserting rubbish along the lines of club players getting no football till September, things were in danger of losing the run of themselves.
The league situation needs sorting without a doubt, but it is not the end of the world & with a little common sense could be fixed fairly easily.
Playing championship during the summer while the county is going well will be more difficult to tease out.

Some of the Donegal lads are getting a bit defensive. Ritchie from Cork and Damothedub for instance give a different perpespective on this. The point too is Dublin and Cork are very much duel code counties, not only do they have the issues with County versus Club, but problems between both codes as well at all levels of the game.

Donegal might as well be a duel county, except it is soccer instead of hurling. The level of interest at club level in soccer in Donegal is as big as football, and this is reflected in the disproportionately large number of donegal footballers who make it cross channel. It is a big threat to gaelic football, and only time will tell if the suspension of club matches will reflect in a turn away from gaelic football towords soccer.

Agreed MH , title of thread making a countywide issue a personality issue , but regards being easily fixed wish I had your confidence , theres no money ,will, desire to sort the club scence as I see it , championship is what club players thrive for , they suffer in an inability to book holidays and have a life , the county boys are in same situation but with a lot more reward .

Damo,

A sign of the times we live in I suppose. Everything is high pressure, everything is a matter of life & death & the demands both physical & time wise take a lot of the fun out of it all.

I was chatting to a couple of "old timers" last week, after the death of Donegal great John Hannigan, who remember Donegal playing in Croke Park in the 1960's when three of them were released from the cells on Sun morning having indulged too much on Sat night & starting a row in a pub.

Couldn't see JMcG going for that too much.....

As for fellas talking about Cork & Dublin being dual counties, don't you know that Donegal are now in Div 2 of the hurling league which makes us a dual county as well!!!!!

Well done on Div 2 , just remind me again how many teams you have hurling ,making achievement even greater , now are you dual in other words do you attend the hurling , seriously it is a sign of the times the Fun aspect obviously gone , but as I said the rewards are great for county lads , FairPlay to the lads who play senior for club for they are real martyrs to the cause .

This was a complete non story. McHugh was playing for his club kilcar last weekend. Obviously fixtures went ahead and county players played.
