Former Donegal All-Ireland winning great Martin Shovlin was christened 'Duracell' recently after a local paper covered a league game in which he was playing. 47 years young and he just keeps going....

Paul Durcan - Pappa

We also had a minor player a few years back who was nicknamed 'Chadwick' as he had the misfortune of looking like former United winger Luke.

Chainsaw , thanks for explaining the origin of 'The Bombers' nickname. Makes sense now that I've heard it.

I reckon one in every 3/4 clubs has somebody named Bomber, they are generally a bit overweight (and thats putting it nicely), sport a beard or a mop of hair or both, slow as a rainy week but can catch a ball and create general chaos in around the area. I reckon thats how Bomber Liston got his name as well! I know a neighboureing club of ours in Wexford (Monageer) has a guy named Bomber who fits this bill as well.
Another few our Wexford friend forgot - Sambo (Ciaran Kenny), Rio (Keith Rossiter).

I heard once before that the technical definition (if there is such a thing) of a bomber is a large target man with limited mobility.

There was an Irish swimmer in the 1970s called 'Chalky' White.

Is Gary a grandson of 'the Boiler' White a Kildare star of the distant past?

Replying To mid-mon man:  "As far as monaghan players go:

Padraig McBennett - Butsy
Dermot McArdle - Strimmer
Eoin Lennon - Spindly
Stephen Gollogly - Jinxy
Paul Finlay - Jap

They're the only real nicknames which aren't a different form of their actual name. Finlay and Gollogly inherited them names from their aul boys I think, not exactly sure what they mean though. Don't know the origin of the other three boys' nicknames either.

And then there's the most famous monaghan player of all, Nudie Hughes, well I don't know why he's called that and I don't want to know either!"
I heard 'Nudie' Hughes got his nickname from his pronunciation of his name 'Eugene' as a 4-year old starting school.

Rhode players, Braxty, Hefty, Super, and in the past Beezly. Good at the alternates over there!
