What are the weirdest names you've come up against on the pitch?
I've no doubt I've probably come up against every type of animal there is; from pheasant to bear and so on..
I reckon Crowshite or Arse Bandit are probably the best I've heard.

Handbag is a well know hurler & footballer in Kildare.

I once knew a team whose fullback and goalkeeper were "Black" & "Magic".

The "Black" term came about as he was a mechanic whose hands, in those pre work-glove days always shoed his profession, tested mant a jaw.

The keeper's came from an incident where he demolished a box of a certain type of choclates !!!

"The Gunner" Brady

A Cavan legend. As far as I know he won All Irelands with Cavan in the 40s/50s. Would love to know the story behind this nickname. His nephew is Paul Brady the handball champ, he carries the "The Gunner" now. Anyone know anything about this?

Many years ago in an under-14 county final in Galway I marked a big lad whose nickname was Buinneach. I learned afterwards that this is the Irish word for diarrhea! Surely one of the worst nicknames ever.

Marked a lanky lad called 'Spider Legs' donkeys years ago while playing St. Annes above in their pitch on the side of a mountain in Bohernabreena! He was their target man due to his height and they served him high balls galore and got a few scores off me at the very start of the game as I was too busy falling about the place laughing every time somebody roared "C'mon Spider Legs!" (you know the way laughing mid-sprint just saps the energy out of your run) before I finally got over it and got to work on him when 'enough was enough' as my manager roared at me!! He actually tried to get thick with me for splitting my sides laughing at his nickname!

Cant remember the club he belonged to but supporters on the sideline shouting "C'mon the Red Flare!" at a young bright ginger haired lad on the pitch!!....now he was excellent in fairness!!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

My own county has had its fare share of players with nicknames down the years - Pat Red Collier, Peter The Man in the Cap McDermot, Paddy Hands OBrien, Jinxy Beggy, Biggy Reilly. My personal favourite is an underage opponent from many years ago known as the Snot.

There's a lad called Turkey playin with one of the Junior clubs in Meath, Dunsany or Drumbaragh i think. Had a team mate before that went by the name of 'Chopper', not because he was a hard tackler but because he had rather prominent front teeth

Was watching an u.16 game just this year and one of the players on the other team was nicknamed Squarebag.

I asked someone I knew why they called him that, and it was actually quite funny, he took one of those abnormally square GAA Cúl Camp bags to school!
