Ladies football is a farce and a sham. The GAA is built around parishes. Donaghmoyne in Monaghan are the most successful Ulster side in Ladies football history. At least half the team are not from Donaghmoyne and don't live there and they leave places that have a ladies team to join them. Congrats to Carnacon on winning the All Ireland club title for the 6th time and of course to Cora who won her 10th All Ireland medal today. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 03/12/2017 18:50:03 2064339 Link 0 |
We talk about the greats in GAA and indeed other sports in Ireland, But Cora Staunton is up with our greatest sporting people from all disciplines, undoubtedly in 50 years time people will still be talking about this woman's immense abilities. grellans89 (Galway) - Posts: 257 - 04/12/2017 01:38:06 2064356 Link 0 |
I can't help but wonder about this move to Australia. She's clearly the greatest female GAA player of all time but with all due respect why is an AFL club paying a woman in her mid-thirties to move countries and try learning a different sport? Is there some media angle I haven't heard about?

I heard an interview with one of the Sydney Giants coaches. This is only the second season of professional womens AFL and in the first season the Kings won one, drew one, and lost five. Because it is a relatively new sport the squad they had last year was young and inexperienced. The manager said they were on the lookout for a player who was a leader on the pitch, was physically strong and had experience of playing at a high level, which are definitely attributes Cora has in spades. He was really hoping that Cora could help bring a change of mindset to the dressing room to a high performance elite level, considering her years of experience with Mayo.

Or alternaltively could it not be a smart marketing ploy for the Ladies AFL game with regards to their Irish recruitment drive. Want to attract players - get the highest profile player over the last number of years signed up! Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 05/12/2017 13:57:24 2064468 Link 1 |
A monster of a player. Incredible some of the scores she's put up over the years. Good luck to her over there, you'd be very brave to back against her being a success. KildareKelly (Kildare) - Posts: 593 - 05/12/2017 16:10:44 2064488 Link 0 |
