Hurling All Stars

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

No much talk in the media about the All Stars on Friday. Seems to be a by product of the split season where the championship feels like an eternity ago. I think the hurling will be along these lines.

P.Murphy
M.Butler D. Morrissey H. Lawlor
D.Byrnes WODonoghue K.Hayes
DODonovan T.Kelly
SODonnell TJ Reid T.Morrissey
A.Gillane C.Whelan E.Cody

Limerick - 7, KK - 5, Clare - 2 Galway - 1

Journeyman I'd agree with 14 of them, think o donohue at midfield and conlan at c/back with Kelly losing out.I don't think there will be any change to the 6 forwards..hurler of the year will surely be gillane..

Decent team, but I'm not sure that KK will have five, or that Clare will have two. There was a big gap between LK and KK and maybe LK should have more than seven if KK have five. While I couldn't argue with your full forward line, I think Peter Casey will be selected, even if it means switching someone to the half forward line. I would also include Barry Nash, the best corner back in the game, I believe.

Will O'Donoghue was nominated in mid-field, so that may have a knock-on effect: one that suits me actually.

Put John Conlon in at no. 6. Shift WOD to mid-field. Give Kelly no. 16, and keep the forwards as they are, except put Lee Chin in instead of TJ (the latter part won't happen).

Great Shot at the team. Only John Conlan in for his fellow Clare man Tony Kelly.

Congrats to all on the all stars. Tough on the likes of Barry Nash, he was hurler of the year nominee last season and just because he didn't quite hit those lofty heights this year as he was watched more he misses out. Was he still one of the best corner backs in the game though? I think he was. Mikey Butler is a brilliant corner back and his all star is well deserved but Nash is on another level imo. He reads the game, play makes and overall leaves a much larger foot print on games than most other corner backs. Butler will win you matches but having Barry Nash wins you all Irelands and has invented the position of the play making corner back.

Good all star team, Quaid or Murphy for Goal and TJ or TK for the last forward spot were 50/50 calls, rest of team picked itself really.

Barry Nash deserves an All star, great year as a pure defender and only occasionally an attacking threat.

Kilkenny are lucky to have 5 all stars, Micky Butler and TJ Reid in particular should not have been given awards IMO. Nicky Quaid can feel unlucky particularly after the All Ireland final display but Murphy's save v Clare got him over the line (not saying I agree but can understand the decision). I dont think John Conlan had a great year for Clare (roasted in the Munster final and just ok in the All Ireland semi final) but hard to argue for anyone else. Along with Quaid I think Barry Nash, Cathal Mannion, and David Fitzgerald were maybe unlucky.

I'd agree with you on TJ's selection. I don't think he was one of the best 6 forwards in the championship this year based on performances. His scoring contribution from play wasn't very impressive at 2-12 in 8 games. 2-06 of that came against Antrim and Westmeath. He was scoreless from play in the two biggest matches.
He's obviously still an excellent free-taker and had some great moments creating scores for others, but I feel he got the award more on reputation this year.

I'd have had Tony Kelly instead of TJ and Barry Nash instead of Butler.

Wouldn't agree on Butler correct FB line was picked, TJ and goalie were marginal calls like I said in a previous post, agree no standout centre back WOD would nearly be a contender just from 2 games.

If Wexford could sign Barry Nash or Mikey butler and you based it on this years performance would you take Butler over Nash. I could have green glasses but I think Nash is judged to a higher standard based on what he has done the year before and he is the superior performer this year and last year in reality. Can butler impact the flow of a game in the same manner as Nash? I don't think so but would be more interested in someone like you who would be neutral in this. As an out and out traditional defender role butler might just shade it and that's debatable but in distribution, positional sense, leadership, passing, ground covered and most other measurable metrics I'd sayNash is clear.

I recall being quite passionate back in July about TJ being nowhere near an all star this year, just after the season ended.

Scroll forward 5 months, TJs all-star is confirmed, and I couldn't give a phuck. More split season syndrome perhaps......I can't even remember my anti-TJ arguments from July at this stage. I've a feeling they were accurate though, fell on deaf/blind selector faculties obviously?

There different types of players Butler generally picks up the biggest threat in the opposition in terms of speed, TK been the perfect example, Nash usually ends up in a somewhat free role as everyone plays a 2 man FF line and is hugely effective at it. Based on 2023 championship Butler would shade over Nash and no doubt its close, prior performance shouldn't dicate anyway, perfect example Sean Finn is the best defender in the country but for 2022 all stars he didn't deserve it over the 3 lads picked who were Butler, Nash and I can't remember off hand if Lawlor or Morrissey got full back.

Just add to on I think Nash had a better year than Conlon so there could have been merit for that change and picking someone out of position at 6. Wasn't any outstanding 6 in championship from what I remember.

Nash is an excellent defender and improved on that this year while his flashier stuff was limited this year as teams were waiting for his raiding runs but he still got up the field alot. I think if you were just to watch him as a defender this year he deserved an All Star, with Sean Finn out he had to change his game to stay in the full back line a lot more.

Thought Will O'Donoghue was excellent there myself

He certainly was in the final and settled in well in the semi final after a shaky start, debate I suppose is did he play there enough to merit an all star?

Probably not. But that hasn't stopped them in the past.
