Media Coverage Of Losing Teams And Managers

(Oldest Posts First)

no doubt some will attack from the off, those more balanced will discuss no doubt, but I was just reading the after match comments on various platforms of media and just struck me (yet again) the back slapping and "hard luck but ye were great" that we seen some teams get (not all teams I suppose is what Ime highlighting) Of course, there is nothing wrong with it, it is fair to acknowledge that teams such as Derry and Monaghan (the neutrals favourites no doubt) ar almost patronised..we never or rarely see that with the sucessful teams when they do lose, Derek Lyng might get a small bit on Sunday if Kilkenny lose but that will be only because its his first year, but it will die away pretty quicly..even today reading where people are saying how Monaghan and Derry for example did their counties proud, and for sure they did, but I think they will be just saying "we lost" and could have won etc..we never or rarely see this when a traditional county loses..again no need to shoot down the topic..most will understand what Ime saying...some counties the media seem to think they need reassuring that they done well etc..I am sure they dont even want the attention in ways...

Have to say I totally agree with this. All media coverage from RTE and the various podcasts all seemed to focus on the merits and qualities of the losing teams. Yes they were very good and could have caused an upset but they ultimately the fact is that they lost. The usual narrative then puts this down to "their legs were gone" or "they took wrong options at clutch moments in the game" due to inexperience. Take for example the perceived mistake that Derry went for long kickouts towards the end of the game when the shorter more targeted kickout had worked. for so long. But that was becauseKerry went full press and left Lynch with much fewer options. It was not so much that Derry left it on the table - ultimately Kerry took the game to a different level and key players like Sean O'Se began to clcik.
