All Ireland Final 2023 - Dublin V Kerry

Replying To baire:  "After all the medals and AIs these Dublin players have won, more than most counties have won in their history, it's hard to fathom the moaning and baby crying from 'some of them' in the last two or so years, behaving like spoiled children whose toys were taken off them. Then the bawling, navel gazing and bragging after the final whistle yesterday...yuck! Spare a thought for the great footballers and hurlers from other counties who would die happy to have won just once...
No wonder Colm O' Rourke told James McCarthy, after the last time Dublin trounced Meath, to **** Off and retire and give other teams a chance to win."
What a nasty bitter little man you are .

Replying To gahfan:  "I'd be a bit disillusioned with it all, dublin and kerry dominating and even the fact that the big referee calls seem to go their way against other teams. Note McCarthy's comments about the hurt from the last two years. Talk about a lack of self awareness towards all those from other counties."
Hi Gahfan your post is very interesting and I actually kind of agree with you. I as a Kerryman firstly feel in being disrespectful to other counties when I celebrate a Kerry win as we have won so much. Many neutral are sickened the way Dublin are on about 2 years of hurt (and you have Mayo with 72)but I will try explain. The more you win, the more you want to win. It's like giving the child the first lick of ice cream. Now the kid wants it everyday. I posted a couple of years ago on here that when Dublin will fall they will be very down and the hunger to win again will be massive. A few Dublin posters felt ah sure we ve achieved everything we happy with out lot. But now here we are and the posters are saying its the sweetest ever. I understand perfectly. Winners are greedy. We always want more. I thought after winning last year I would be sated for a few years but No and I'm taking this loss worse than any for years. I'm taking the loss as hard as the Dubs are taking the enjoyment. Its not disrespect it's love of our counties. Dublin fans thought they had enough but we are human and we always want more and fair play to them. I have nt seen Dublin players enjoy a victory so much since 2011(ironically the last one that hurt me so much). I also love boxing and I believe in the adage of the famous trainer Cus Damato "it's only when you lose you can become a great champion". The real champions come back from defeat and Dublin did thats why they are great champions. Dublin and Kerry or Kilkenny in hurling are nt being disrespectful. We just hungry for more. On the referees and decisions I'm afraid I agree with you though in that the big teams always get the decisions. I as a Kerryman admit we got them at times especially v Mayo 14 and even got the luck v Galway last year and Derry this year. It's the same in most sports like premiership etc. It's wrong but it happens. Hope that's of help Gahfan.

Replying To sligo joe:  "I think this "McCarthy could have/should have" been sent off is being overplayed. If James was booked for the first high challenge it is highly likely he would have backed off from the subsequent fouls. A small cohort believe/contend that the first challenge deserved a straight red, I don't agree.
I didn't hear Silke and Clerkin but if they said Gough refrained from applying the rules because James is captain, well that's a bigger show of disrespect to Gough than any booing after the game."
My point was Dublin fans were booing Gough but Gough did nt do them any harm. I'm glad Jamsie was nt sent off and I'm delighted for James himself he got to lift Sam as captain (was just hoping it was nt v us). Outside if Kerry I can't think of any player I admire more than James Mccarthy. As for Clerkin and Silke well they just giving their opinion.

Replying To Meridian:  "Mick, is it just me or is there a distinct lack of talent coming through in Kerry at the moment? I was struck by the standard of their bench which was quite poor I thought. Nobody that you could say was going to provide a spark or turn a game on its head. No young fella with bags of skill which was a trademark of Kerry football. There was always the next superstar on the horizon. The fact that any of the Kerry substitutions on Sunday, was met by any roar from the crowd told its own story.

I also think they need to find a new midfielder fast as the jury is out on the 2 that are currently there. Jack Barry's race is run. Great servant but time waits for no man and O'Connor has had 1 good game and was anonymous for lots of the Championship. Same could be said for O'Brien and Moynihan too. I just don't think this Kerry team are that good and the brilliance of the Cliffords and Sean has carried them."
Hi Meridian and great question. It's a little complex. First of all I would know as much as people from home as I'm based up here but I do try take in club matches when I'm home. First of all is midfield. Now we have great hopes for a midfielder called Joe Ó Connor who came on as a sub in last years final. He was primed to take over from David Moran but unfortunately he did his cruciate before Xmas and was a huge loss to us this year. Just hope he comes back the same as those injuries can ruin careers. Also we have Stefan Okunbar who came back from Aussie rules. Stefan is big strong very athletic and a great fielder but he tore the hamstring of the bone during a league game v Tyrone and also put for the year. On Stefan though I'm not sure of his vest position. Full back half back midfield but he would ve a great impact sub. We have some good backs. Forwards is a bit of an enigma as when David Clifford is playing the corner forwards find it hard as the other players normally look for David. We had a guy on the subs Sunday. Donal Ó Sullivan. He is a classy speedy high scoring forward and I'm sure he be lighting up during the league. So basically yes we have talent but it's to try get the right balance. We need one strong midfield (hopefully Joe Ó Connor) and we need another scoring half forward. Our problem is we have loads of corner forwards but half forward line a problem. If Kerry will be there or thereabouts again next year I'd guess.

Yes but I'd say he said it as a joke. O Rourke has great praise for Mccarthy.

A but of trivia for the Dub posters. I always slag my workmates saying in my lifetime Dublin never won an all ireland without Kerry blood as in the sons of Kerry people like Brian Mullins Fenton Cian Ó Sullivan The Brogans and 95 Keith Galvin but one of my mates (a Dub) just texted me now with this. Dublin won the All ireland in 1942 and the team had 6 Kerrymen on it. The two midfielders were Kerrymen Joe Falvey and Joe Fitzgerald (who captained the team). If it was right players I'd be looking to have half an all ireland on our roll of honour.

Replying To CiarraiMick:  "I just watched final again for the 3rd time. This time using pause button rewind etc. Now anyone that watches game again will see that while Clifford left his shooting boots at home his misses had zero to do with Mick Fitz. Now Fitz is a top defender but Clifford ghosted by him everytime and Fitz never won one ball off him. In fact Clifford had free shots as he got by Fitz easily. Even for the goal he wrong footed Fitz who thought David was going to use his left leg but tricked him using the right. Calls for Fitz to be motm were ridiculous. Also it was James Mccarthy poorest game I ever saw him play. Fentonn gad a good second half and Mannion had a fine game. Paddy Small played alot better than I originally thought as did Basquel in 2nd half. For Kerry Morley Paudie Clifford were very good and Geaney had a fine game. Both keepers were excellent and Brian Howard was fab."
As a neutral supporter, I think that is a fair and accurate reflection of the game/players Mick. The only issue I would have is that Fenton a couple of times and Mannion seemed to get through the center of Kerry's defence very easy for some scores. Not sure if it was Morley's fault, or was he dragged out of position by other Dublin forwards.
I read somewhere that Howard picked up 10 out of 23 Cluxton kickouts. How did Kerry allow that to continually happen and whose job was it to mark Howard?
Cluxton is without doubt the best keeper of all time to find his man from kickouts, and his ability in that area will never be matched.

Replying To Joxer:  "TBH Mick, I was at all of Cluxton's games and saw a lot of Beggan this year. I didn't see much of Ryan bar the final and he didn't do much that I can remember. I still think that Cluxton and Beggan are the best around although Beggan's forays almost cost Monaghan a goal in the semi. He and Cluxton are excellent strikers of the ball though. Cluxton almost got to Geaney twice for his goal but the extra hop helped Geaney no doubt. Ryan may be good but you've seen more of him than I."
Ah no I'm just saying Ryan was excellent too all season but facts are facts and in final tbf Cluxton had 100% kickout and scored two great points.

How refreshing to read this honest perspective from a fellow Galwegian which paints the picture that the Dubs need to view from beyond their own wee inward-looking GAA settlement. I would love to add more but unfortunately it would just attract more moronic comments from the pram!

Replying To sligo joe:  "For the Kerry Goal fitzsimmons stayed on Clifford's left boot to prevent David from looping out and pointing with his left. If, as he did, Clifford puts in a low pass with his right it's up to the defenders inside to deal with it. In this case excellent defence by Mick.
Interesting stat, in his last 6 "knock-out" championship games David has scored 1-14 from play, average less than 3pts a game. What was missing on Sunday was his usual couple of marks that he often catches on his own in space. He was never let wander into these spaces on Sunday. Clifford is always going to win possessions, marking him from in front is not an option.
Goalies excellent but shaded by Cluxton(assisted by Howard) with Ryan losing 3 restarts."
Have to say I thought Mick Fitz did really well on DC.
Yes, Clifford scored 2 pts from play but only 3 overall.
He set up the goal, but for me, Mick was in no way at fault for that. The pass should have been intercepted before it got to Geaney.

No denying DC superb talent but he cant be happy with just 3pts and only 2 from play.

SOS only got 1pt from play and these 2 are the go to men on that Kerry team.

I think the burden on DC to score big in every game clearly shows that the team are over reliant on him.

With all the talk of who on the Dublin team will now call it a day, I think 1 or 2 from kerry might also tbh.
Geaney and O'Brien and Murphy are on the road a long time - will they all stay on board for another year..?

Another player I forgot to mention who has been immense recently has been Brian Howard.
Back to his best imo.

On a side note - I know when Dublin have to lost in the past 2 years in those semi finals - I still havent watched them back. Resigned the defeats to the bin tbh and moved on. No point in torturing oneself... Personal choice of course and everyone to their own.

Finally on Clucko - nearly 42 - wow, what a player. Those 2points in the final - nerves of steel.
With all the talk of no free/45 taker with Deano not starting - Dessie clearly had a plan for Stephen to take up the baton on this. Thankfully it worked out for us.

Morley was concentrating on Con so much it did open the middle in hindsight we should have started A. Spillane and dropped him back there maybe but sure tis easy be wise after. Ah look Cluxton is special no doubt. I hate using the goat as times are different but the best compliment I can give Stephen is that in my lifetime I have nt seen a better keeper.

Agree, thought it strange that the President named and gave his town in County Meath, set him up for a good jeer ( old county rivalry). He should have just thanked the ref and his officials

What a stupid comment!
Dubs need to do nothing but celebrate their great win. You're either a winner or a loser.
Maybe when you and your fellow Galwegians ditch the loser mentality your county might go on and actually win something. Failing that you may as well keep whinging and indulging your begrudgery.

Interesting article by Lee Keegan today also on this same point:-

"And that's a wrap. The 2023 season is done and the Dubs are back on top, as some of us predicted from the start.

I think everyone was struck by the scenes at the final whistle last Sunday and the intensity of the celebrations from the Dublin players, most of whom had bundles of All-Ireland medals already.

After the finals we lost to Dublin, I never detected that level of emotion in them."

Many non Dubs I know commented that they hadnt seen such celebrations since 2011 from the Dublin players, even after the 5 or 6 in a row victories. And as a Dublin fan, I hadnt either.

As you allude to - it takes a great team to come back, after all the previous success and then the results of the past 2 seasons. the determination this year to right a wrong (in their eyes) was very evident.

I saw a wonderful photo of Jamesie and Fento on their knees hugging each other after the game - that photo summed it up for me.

Next year will be interesting, what other counties will challenge - Galway, Derry, Mayo, Tyrone, Armagh.? Who knows - but hopefully the GAA will spread it out a but more. Far too condensed this year. An extra 2 weeks time frame, wouldnt be that much to ask imo.

Replying To Sindar:  "He didn't stop it in error. Two players were fouling each other."
He did stop in error as he did nt know 2 players were fouling each other until after he spoke to his umpire. So yes he did stop the game in error as he awarded a free in (which he then decided he erred on) so an indirect free should ve been given to Kerry where the ball was originally kicked from. I know you ré a ref but I was told this from a ref too last night (and the ref is from Dublin).
