Derry v Armagh - 2023 Ulster SFC Final

If some people think 29 players crammed inside the 50 yard line is enjoyable to watch they are easy pleased. These same people seem to think that great players from the past who your father's and grandfather's idolised were only bog men who hoofed the ball says it all.

Replying To Saynothing:  "Definitely not, most GAA football fans thought it was what we needed. Even Tomas O Shea was raving about it. It had everything especially great scores. Players with skill not afraid to shoot from more than 35 yards. You couldn't watch teams bringing the ball to within 20 yards from goal where your granny would kick them over."
We in donegal could do with your granny!! As we are struggling for people to put ball over from 20 yards

Replying To 97Cavans:  "Wow what a game. Pity that such a hard fought, enthralling contest would be decided by those watery, long drawn out penalties. But I suppose it would have been worse had it been decided by an advanced mark, which Grugan failed to convert. Who is making these changes to our game?

What a performance from McGuigan. He is up there with the best in the country. In general the Derry lads seem like a sound bunch so I was happy to see them win it.

Both teams should be able to relax a bit now and work their way through the next few weeks of shadowboxing. Armagh need to beat Westmeath at home and they need to be careful as Westmeath have some dangerous forwards on their day. Would like to see Derry get a crack at Kerry at some stage."
Yes. Derry v Kerry would indeed be an interesting one to see. I reckon they are type of team that would give Kerry a few headaches.

All shadow boxing for next month. Be interesting to see on final day if teams might be able to sort of pick who they might get to play in the next round! Could be some strategic use of the panel ....

Armagh lost, Derry won and congratulations
But some of the analysis is shocking …. This match was sold out…. No tickets online …. While the Hill was only half full …. Whatever you say the Ulster Championship is still alive…. No one left before the final whistle

No one is having a go at Armagh or Derry it was a very close contest to the end but very hard if not impossible for any team to play football when you have 12 to 14 players in your half forward line for most of the game . If any one goes to any undeage game at any grade it is a much better spectacle to watch so thats telling us all we need to know and rule changes are needed to keep 8 outfield players in each half of the field for the entire match ie 4 from each team.

Why? So the purists can get what they want? There are different ways to win a game of football. Different ways to skin a cat. My own view is that I like my team to be successful, not a bit bothered how that is achieved.

Very hard to referee that scenario though. Grand at county level where there are enough officials to keep track but at club level it would be very difficult. I agree with what you're saying though in general. Most of the Ulster final last Sunday was boring enough until near the end and extra time.

I was listening to Thomas Niblock's podcast yesterday where Francie Bellew was the guest. Francie hasn't much time for modern football and reckons playing full-back these days would be a doddle. I know that here in Donegal the days of a young McBrearty, McFadden or a Murphy bursting through to make an instant impact at senior level appear to be long gone. Is it the possession at all costs style of play that is resulting in a lack of quality inside forwards? Or were the above lads just generational talents?

Clifford, O'Callaghan, Walsh, Comer, Mulroy, O'Neil, just examples, not sure if we ever had as many top class inside men at the one time?
