(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I see TG4 are going doing a new Underdogs series, for the first time featuring hurling!! Anyone who has never played McCarthy Cup is eligible to apply. Looking forward to seeing this!

Team of 2005 that played Kilkenny.

TG4 UNDERDOGS XV: 1 - Richie O'Neill (Kilmacow, Kilkenny). 2 - Niall Corcoran (Meelick Eyrecourt, Galway) (capt), 3 - Brendan Lohan (Kilconieron, Galway), 4 - Martin Kirwan (Shanahoe, Laois). 5 - Bryon Duff (Toomevara, Tipperary), 6 - Damian Cosgrave (Monaleen, Limerick), 7 - Denis Kelly (Conahy Shamrocks, Kilkenny). 8 - Padraig Madden (Lorrha, Tipperary) (vice-capt), 9 - Richie Hennessey (Ardmore, Waterford). 10 - Mark O'Connor (Erin's Own, Cork), 11 - Nicky Jacob (St Saviours, Waterford), 12 - Michael Grace (Inistiogue, Kilkenny). 13 - Andrew McGovern (Mullinavat, Kilkenny), 14 - Ronan Hayes (Sixmilebridge, Clare), 15 - John Ryan (Portroe, Tipperary).

Substitutes: 16 - Alan Franks (Ballyskenagh, Offaly), 17 - Gerry Slattery (Kiladagan, Tipperary), 18 - Derrick Murphy (Turloughmore, Galway), 19 - Pearse Davern (Knockainey, Limerick), 20 - David Canning (Portumna, Galway), 21 - Damian O'Meara (St Oliver Plunketts, Tipperary), 22 - Garret McPhillips (Wolfe Tones, Clare), 23 - Brian Foley (Adare, Limerick), 24 - Enda Collins (Killinena, Clare), 25 - Dónal O'Reilly (Mullagh, Galway). Injured (Unfit to play): 26 - Eddie Brennan (Erin's Own, Castlecomer, Kilkenny).

That's what a quick google found me... I said Shane McGrath from Tipp was involved but looks like I'm wrong based off that

There was a hurling one years back, as far as I can recall Tipps Shane Mc Grath played on it. They played then down in Nowlan Park and got annihilated. I was at it. I think it was back around 2006, they wore black and red jersies too.

In essence the Underdogs will be comprised of the McDonagh and Ring Allstars with maybe a few from the Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher competitions making it as well

You are right Shane McGrath played in final I remember and scored a point or two but I never actually seen him in the series before that, I think more from 2004 or 2005 that the series was on

You'd wonder who they are going to play at the end of the new series. Most Recent few underdogs series the underdogs have been annihilated, I'd hate to think what sort of a hiding they would get it they were to play the likes of Limerick.
I like the concept of the show but I don't know how realistic it is in modern day.

Off the top of my head

Kerry - Fionan Mackassey & Shane Conway
Antrim - Neil McManus
Carlow - Marty Kavanagh
Westmeath - Killian Doyle
Kildare - Jack Sheridan
Down - Conor Woods

The you'd have really good club hurlers from all the Liam
McCarthy counties who never made the county panel.

No Lory Meagher or Nicky Rackard hurler would be able for
Senior hurling.

i thought it was for players who never played county that was the point of the series, some of the players listed on this topic are all county players

No the eligibility criteria for this year is that it is open to all male players who have never played with an inter-county team in the Liam McCarthy Cup

It can only be good for hurling if they did the same with football there would be no need for the Taltean Cup comp.

That's the year I was talking about. Eamonn, Cathal Moore and Pat Fleury were the selectors

They played a game v Thurles Sarsfields I think and afterwards the management left them out for a drink. But most of the players took advantage!

Mind you - several members of the Limerick senior intercounty team of that era were well known to go on the lash!!!

You'd wonder who thought this was a good idea again. The two football ones were a complete disaster. Don't see how this will go any better.
