Is it time referee's had no say in who does umpire? It's usually their friends or relations who are more worried about where they are feeding after game.

The referee doesn't just bring them along for the dinner. That's a ridiculous statement

Where do you recommend getting these VOLUNTEERS from?. They give up an awful amount of their time most weekends of the year. If the are doing it for a dinner I'd hope it's a 4 course in a Michelin star restaurant.

Volunteer yourself and see easy it is.

I remember saying to a ref many moons ago, after a disputed point, that the lads he'd brought up as umpires, were only there for the feed, didn't go down well, as it was obvious they were not up to scratch

You don't volunteer to be an umpire, your asked. And yes it's easy, inside of upright point, outside of upright wide.

Officials not entitled to make mistakes but players are? Strange view. Fermanagh players and Westmeath players made loads of mistakes yesterday but no one remotely criticised them after game while officials were verbally abused, threatened and intimidated afterwards.

Players get punished for their mistakes and admit their mistakes, and unlike refs they don't punish people who point out their mistakes.

Its a sign of how good most umpires are that out of the dozens of matches
yesterday, one clear mistake was made for one score in one game.

People are human, they make mistakes. Without officials there will be
no games.

Its time for umpires at inter county level to be qualified referees, there's too much at stake. Its not good enough just to be good club Men anymore or mates with the ref.

Where do you propose to get these hundreds of refs from? 32 league matches would require 224 referees. What are clubs supposed to do? There were many hundreds of club league games on yesterday.

Players make mistakes and they're dropped. Ask Louth people from 2010 or Fermanagh players from yesterday, it is they who train all year for this to happen. And no officials shouldn't get abuse but they do need called out on their mistakes.

Is it time for everybody to accept that players and managers make mistakes which cost games just as often as referees?
I am so fed up hearing people complaining about referees. People need to accept you get some decisions, some you don't, and get over it.

It's fairly obvious from your comment that you are well removed from grass roots GAA, at least from an admin and logistics perspective.

The individuals who umpire Intercounty games are often friends and relatives of the referees. Of course they are!!
To say they are umpiring these games for the "feeding after the game" is incredibly disrespectful. These are the people that go with the referees all over their county firstly, from junior dog fights all the way up to intense senior championship games for absolutely nothing. I'd note most refs aren't doing this for the 40/50 quid they get either, there's plenty easier ways to make money.

Without these kinds of people grassroots gaa games wouldn't be able to go ahead and for that matter neither would Intercounty. The game would survive just fine without an "official on the ditch" such as yourself. Best of luck to you finding the guts of 150 umpires for league games between hurling and football on any given weekend.

Yes but where do you get referees for all these club games if all these referees are doing umpire duties.
