Hogan Cup Final

(Oldest Posts First)

If anyone missed it and is lost for something to do, the Hogan cup final that was played between Naas CBS and St Brendan's Killarney was one of the best matches you're likely to see all year. Phenomenal skill, moves and scores throughout and still available on TG4 player.

Congrats to both teams on a fantastic game of football

A Kildare front line 'with feet', something I haven't seen before. The two no15s in this game were magic. It was fantastically entertaining, and Naas had fine ballers in every line. The sad issue with football now though is that one man's 'football as it should be played' is another man's 'naive defending', and if a Naas style outfit runs into a Jim McGuiness styled outfit, there'll only be 'one wunner' there, as McAvenny told the Newstalk boys after the 2014 semi Dubs/Donegal.

It really was refreshing to see such an outstanding game of football between two very talented, totally committed and enthusiastic teams. Considering most of the players are only 17 or 18 year of age, it was an exceptionally good game of football. Some of the scores were of the highest standard. I think what I liked most was the absence of the awful endless handpassing back and forth in the middle of the field and the pulling and dragging and fouling which are currently blighting the game at most levels. It is probably a forlorn hope, but wouldn't it be great if these very talented young players were allowed play like this all the time but I'm sure they will be 'coached' into submission to the 'system'. Well done to both teams and hard luck to St. Brendan's but well done to Naas CBS on their first victory in this prestigious competition.

It was a brilliant game of football and congratulations to Naas, some great footballers in both teams.

Crowleys basketball flick behind his back was pure class.

only seen the second half best football i have ever seen even better than under 21 final last year. No back passing very little sideways passing win the ball take on your man beat him and let it on fast. The speed of the game score taking and skills from both teams was breath taking. you would think that the gaa had changed the rules and when you turned over the ball you only had ten seconds to get a score.
I hope that the football is not coached out of these young lads as they get older as they were a joy to watch.
Stats men would have all gone grey and had a heart attack watching this game and would recommend that these young lads never get a game again

Was a fantastic game to watch. Great to see the game played like that.
Then you watch Mayo and Tyrone on the tv tonight to see that puke football is still alive and well unfortunately...

One of the best games of football I've ever watched, really entertaining and of a real high quality. The Sem can consider themselves unlucky but at the same time no one could begrudge Naas their win, they're an excellent team. Their number 15 Kevin Cummins was outstanding and looks a real prospect. The manager said after the game though he's big into soccer and as far as I'm aware he hasn't played minor for Kildare. Kildare should be trying everything to get this fella to commit to football, he's very talented. The other number 15 William Shine was the other outstanding player. He was a starter on the 2020 Kerry minor team but looks to have really pushed on since then. I expect to see him in the inside forward line with the Kerry u20s this year. Luke Crowley son of John Crowley had a brilliant second half and obviously got a lot of attention for that around the back hop. He was very impressive in the 2021 Kerry minor's one game against Cork so he's one to keep an eye on too.

A brilliant game of football. I was feeling sorry for myself having to isolate with Covid on Paddy's Day but this game really lifted my spirits. It was proper sport. Both teams giving it their all to win the top prize for their school.

Yes there were mistakes at times, and hardened cynics might say there was a bit of naivety but so what? It was so refreshing to see two teams just go at it hammer and tongs seeking to win the game rather than trying not to lose if that makes sense?

I also got so nostalgic watching it. What a great time in those young men's lives. Playing in Croke Park with your best mates on Paddy's Day, college/University to come, and their whole lives in front of them.

Well done to all involved.

What a load of tripe. Tyrone v Mayo wasn't great but the entire League has been a bit flat. Furthermore Tyrone were excellent in last year's All Ireland series. They played some excellent, attacking football but sure don't let stereotypes get in the way now.

Fantastic game of ball from pillar to post
Made all the better by the fact that this was Naas CBS first win and indeed a first win for any school in Kildare

Colleges football was always like this, the hurling final on the day was also equally as good a game with a real high skill level. Fair play to the coaches in both schools for allowing players express their football skills in this way.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you, the football in these lads will be coached out of them by inter county managers in years to come. The skill level at senior inter county level is very poor, last week I watched a guy who is one of the stars of one of the favourites for this years All Ireland fail to kick a free directly in front of the posts, 20 metres out, over the bar. These students were a credit to themselves, their schools & their coaches & are probably the last vestige of the real GAA that people like to watch. Watched an Inter county game after that where it was a basketball game played between two 45's that would bore the pants off you.

Hows it tripe? A lad has the ball in corner foward position near the end line and ends up working the ball back to the half way line, how's this muck entertaining? You've forwards then afraid to take shots in front of goal. But sure mabye if you find that entertaining more power to you.
