Dublins Demise

Replying To Joxer:  "Yeah that's a good summary. Apart from it being a terrible spectacle it is a ridiculous tactic when you are trailing by 4 or 5 points. It was incredible to see Dublin's slow hand passing counter attacking style on Sat when trailing. Pass around the 45, kick back to midfield, hand pass to the right wing, hand pass to the left wing and give opposition time to reset, have a pot shot from 35 yards out and send the ball 10 yards wide in a gale. Dublin's trademark under early Gavin was lightning counter attacks, with accurate foot passing, utilising pacy inside forwards. Right now we're just in with the basketball pack. I think Tyrone probably have the mix about right, defend as a group and break at pace transition with the foot more often than the hand."
Yeah and if there is one player that epitomises that it's Conor McKenna. Fair play to him he landed back from Oz and had no fear at all in delivering outside of the boot passes inside to McCurry and co. He also has blistering pace when Tyrone turn the ball over. I remember in the Ulster final he forced a turnover against us inside his own 21 and absolutely sorched earth moving down the pitch to set up McCurry for a point. Much as it sickens my hole to say it, Tyrone do indeed seem to have the right blend.

Replying To BarneyGrant:  "That's a good point about style of play. Donegal at their best were very efficient and disciplined in defence but could turn that into attack at great pace and had the finishers. Dublin began dogged and defensively with Gilroy, learned from Donegal in both 2011 and 2014 and hit on a pretty much unbeatable combination for a few years that as someone else said had become mostly muscle memory but had brilliant players to win on the down curve in 2020.

Tyrone have not been given the credit imho for taking the game to a different level. Their ability to turn over the ball and go route one is highly impressive. Even against Kildare (not slagging Kildare just in context of players and it being February) they showed enough of that to win.

Any team that persists as Dublin and others are doing - even Kerry for all the talk - with a overly cautious approach is not going to beat Tyrone on a good day. They'd still be my pick to win again. Armagh are another team and indeed Kildare who at least at are trying to match them tactically."
Barney I agree Tyrone will be a big force in the championship as I did last year also when a few had them written off. However If you have to judge teams on the league performances so far then Tyrone are just strolling along.Imo Kildare should have beaten Tyrone and at worst got a draw. Also tbf Kildare should also have beaten Kerry. So far Kildare have been the unluckiest team in the league division one.Mayo looked very good v Dublin but average v Donegal. It has been very hard to judge performances as weather conditions have been very poor too.Next sunday in Newbridge is a big game and hopefully weather gets better.

I like the look of Kildare under Ryan. Your own county man maybe brought them on a bit but they were very predictable. They have a bit of spark about them now and if they can start to turn goal scoring opportunities into goals they'll have a fair shot at Leinster at least. This year in division one will bring them on a pile.

I agree, Barney and they have a top backroom team now.

Replying To kentuckytucky:  "Dublin have played this keep ball type game for the past ten years. Only now the difference is teams aren't afraid to go at them and it has them flustered. And teams are dropping balls in on the square too, which they seemed to forget to do previously"
WRONG. Go back and look at the matches Dublin played under Gavin. Dublin played an expansive style of football. The only time Dublin employed the keep ball system of play was when they were ahead by a couple of points with a few minutes to go. Its called in game management, and they were absolutely brilliant at it. It might not be a pretty few mins to watch when you are cheering against Dublin but the concentration, handling and temperament to execute that game plan in the last few mins of a match when lads are exhausted was exceptional. Gavin had them so well drilled to be able to do this, backed up with the obvious raw talent to be able to execute it. Thy NEVER done it when behind in a game. Just look at the first game of the 2019 final against Kerry with 14 men. They went AFTER Kerry. No keep ball then. A time and a place as they say.

The difference now is that Dessie seems to have employed this game plan from minute 1 to minute 70. EVEN when we are behind. It beggars belief actually and is also dreadful to watch!!!

Good things happening at underage in Kildare in both codes Barney the last good few years. When seeds are planted and get looked after well while they are growing it usually means a good crop at harvest time.......

Thread should be named "The Great Dublin Team's Demise". Down but not out. I'm happy to take a back seat for a couple of years. Winning can become boring, well numerous consecutive wins can.
We'll never be as good again, I'll be very surprised if anyone is, even Kerry.

But it does go to show that our wins were purely down to player and management quality. Money helps but money can't buy you love!!

Write Dublin off at your peril. They will soon be back.

Kerry won't even reach the level they themselves were once at. Those days are over.

Well, there's no demise in the hurling anyway. Maybe Cian will have a chat with the other fella about giving up the oul football?

Dublin definitely should be split in 3. I agreed with the split in 2001 when it was first mooted.
Dublin are like Dracula, as Colm O'Rourke correctly pointed out. They are never gone until the stake is through their heart. Dublin will win Leinster. Home advantage all way then in the All Ireland series. All the advantages.

The talk of a Dublin split came long ago before the great 6 in a row team. The split talk was nothing to do with success. It had to do with giving more Dubs a chance to play intercounty etc. Personally I'd hate to see it but I'd say it might happen someday.

Yes, but it took no account of the nature of the GAA in Dublin. It is strong in parts of south county, traditionally always strong for football in rural north county and the older working class parish teams are generally holding up.

However, there's vast areas of the city where GAA barely has a presence. One struggling club in north inner city in an area that has a majority non Irish population with zero interest, Same applies to a good bit of big estates on north side.

A split would do huge damage. A south county football and hurling county side would probably hold its own, but the rest would be in big danger if there were separate boards as realistically there would have to be if there was a split at county level.
