Tier 2 games, i think, would need to be on there own weekend, with the same coverage as say the super 8's does get. Having them all play same weekend tier 2 games will get lost and less coverage. tommy132 (Mayo) - Posts: 602 - 23/10/2019 17:14:46 2245289 Link 0 |
I agree with you, these sort of occasions should not have been taken away from lower division teams in my opinion, and make no mistake, they have been taken away. Now people will be at pains to tell you of all the 'benefits' of this new competition but for me it's all nonsense. Fact of the matter is history has proven that these token B championships mean nothing to people and I find it hard to see this new one being any different. But as the oul saying goes, if you fail to learn from history then you're doomed to repeat it. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 23/10/2019 19:50:11 2245326 Link 2 |
It's actually hard to know the interest and media a tier 2 could create. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 23/10/2019 20:30:53 2245335 Link 1 |
Sly certainly won't be covering them valley84 (Westmeath) - Posts: 1890 - 23/10/2019 21:30:37 2245339 Link 0 |
And do division 3 and 4 teams get covered currently if they don't make super 8's?

Not often but occasionally yes.

Last year Carlow won the mcdonagh cup in hurling. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 25/10/2019 19:33:04 2245800 Link 0 |
Difference is huge though. Those counties weren't really shown on TV in the first place. Many wouldnt compete with sides in tip tier any way. Can you say same about Gaelic? KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3512 - 25/10/2019 20:32:33 2245816 Link 0 |
They may show the final in the first year. If it has survived in the second year you'll see two mins of highlights. Byebyecola (USA) - Posts: 9 - 25/10/2019 21:24:28 2245823 Link 0 |
Well Leix beat Dublin in the championship and Carlow drew with Galway in the league so that's competitive. And Offaly who have been top tier for decades couldn't survive in the Mcdonagh cup. So the standard isn't that bad. Unfortunately no one knows that because they never show any of it. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 25/10/2019 22:12:24 2245836 Link 0 |
Thank you. Was beginning to think I was the only one noticed this

This is a massive opportunity for the GAA to implement far reaching changes, but they have to make it equitable and not a second rate competition. Some of the best games of hurling in the past 2 years have been in the Joe McDonagh cup and there is no reason why the same will not be the case in the tier 2 football championship. 1. Give it a fancy name ASAP. The longer its called the tier 2 champo the less likely it is to catch on. Get a marquee sponsor like - BOI perhaps? 2. Neutral venues need to be full to give the fans a good day out, irrespective of the match. One of the best ways for this tier 2 to fail is if there is no atmosphere and low attendances. To combat this, have the matches in provincial grounds and not Dublin. 3. The games have to have equal billing and even more promotion than the senior championship. To do this, the GAA should fix these games on a double bill with the highest profile qualifier matches and Super 8s. Should Cork fail to be promoted back to division 2 and then lose to Kerry, they could end up in tier 2. Imagine a qualifier double bill, in neutral Portlaoise, Tullamore or Navan, featuring Kerry v Donegal and Cork v Down? 4. Give the tier 2 counties half the tickets for these double headers no matter who is involved. It's unlikely Waterford and Leitrim are ever going to be involved in a football match featuring Dublin, but on a double header where they have an equal chance at getting tickets, they might take the opportunity to watch their native county and stick around to watch Dublin v Tyrone in a relatively full stadium. 5. Change the format from the tedious straight knockout and mimic the super 8s in the final phase with double headers. If there are more games at big venues with big crowds, players will stick around. kingdom_come (Kerry) - Posts: 76 - 26/10/2019 11:08:29 2245905 Link 0 |
Perhaps give to Virgin, maybe they might make something out of it considering it would be their only GAA coverage DuhallowRed (Cork) - Posts: 268 - 26/10/2019 11:35:39 2245910 Link 0 |
Il be perfectly honest, I didn't know Carlow won the Joe McDonagh. I haven't a clue who won the Ring or Meagher comps. That's what I'm afraid about with the Tier 2. You can tart it up as much as you want but people wont watch it, even if its a double header with tier 1 people will stay in the pub etc apart from a few diehards. Its a mindset. In club football who turns up for reserve/junior games, even the finals, a few family members and that's the height of it. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 29/10/2019 15:54:24 2246490 Link 0 |
Would many tune in if they put Tipp against Waterford on TV if it was the old system anyway? Probably not. Semi finals and Finals of Tier 2 would be as much as anyone could ask for to be shown on tv.
