Set Plays Gone Wrong

(Oldest Posts First)

Wonder if anyone has similar stories ..............

Mate of mine was playing full back one night in an underage game and was taking the kick outs. One one kick out he stood behind the end line and shouted 'package o waffles', a signal to to his mate at wing back. After school every day we used to go to the shop and get sweets. The other lad got a packet of waffles. Seemed like a good ploy as he ran to the ball, but looking back now it was the Gaelic Football equivalent of 'seconds from disaster'.......

As he made the call and his run, he started laughing and began to fall. By the time he kicked it he was almost falling and smashed a daisy cutter with his desperate Dan right boot. Manager not impressed, 'package o waffles' scarpering back to help. Don't think we conceded a score but he didn't try it again.

I thought that you meant 'set-plays' by our GAA hierarchy. Silly me

There was a Donegal club final a few years ago that was tied at 5 or 6 points each very deep into injury time.

Defending team playing against wind won a sideline ball about 30 meters out.

The other team ran back to defend a last possible attack but the defender went back to his keeper.

The wind grabbed the pass and it went out for a 45 which was duly kicked over the bar.

There a mate of mine who's son plays u16 for a club in Donegal. The lady who's coaching the team tells him where to stand and what area to cover throughout the game .
She gave 6 backs and a goalkeeper 3 A4 sheets of paper before a divisional league game explaining what was expected of them.
Great lady... she does the bingo too and has kids playing u 8 , 10, and 12.
She also serves communion at the Saturday evening mass. And runs the Post Office.
