From another Galway man, I'll second that. Andy was an honest and brilliant player, a great competitor and an absolute gentleman off the field too. One of the genuine nice guys of the GAA. Enjoy retirement Andy and hope we see you back soon to mentor the next generation in Connacht.

I know. It's hilarious like. A real sad case alright. I love getting them though I have to admit. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 26/08/2019 22:08:45 2229582 Link 1 |
A class act who got better as he got older. A pity he didn't get the All-Ireland medal he deserved. Ailteoir (Galway) - Posts: 863 - 26/08/2019 22:34:04 2229592 Link 1 |

Normally doesn't bother me either catch22, but this is a tribute thread and if a person has nothing good to say why bother to be disrespectful. We all enjoy the games and that's down the huge efforts of the best talents our counties produce... they enrich our lives with very little peronsal gain compared to the journeymen of some other sports.

Legend. I'll miss watching him play.

A class act. Smashing player with great vision for a pass or a point. My favourite Mayo player and always conducted himself like a pro on the field of play. Best of luck to him in his IC retirement. Joxer (Dublin) - Posts: 4700 - 26/08/2019 23:17:43 2229608 Link 10 |
You do have a point. However, in comparing full-forwards I do think that scoring record is a good starting point (excuse pun). And here there is simply no comparison: Cillian has scored 25-298 versus Andy's 11-102, as far as I can ascertain. Of course, Cillian had the added advantage of being the main free taker.

What a player and gael! Like any fine wine, Andy just kept on getting better every year. He will be a huge loss and I still felt he had a lot to offer on the field of play. However, Andy owes Mayo football nothing. He will always be remembered as one of the greats who really put it up to (perhaps) the greatest side of all time but just narrowly came out on the wrong side of the result on most occasions. Sorry to see Andy Moran retire from inter county football. He is a classy player, who can turn on a sixpence and always had the courage to go for a score when the chips were down. A fine player. Liameen (USA) - Posts: 38 - 27/08/2019 01:29:16 2229628 Link 1 |
Didn't serve his county at all.Andy is a Roscommon man from Ballaghdereen Co. Roscommon who spent his career playing for the county of Mayo.Best wishes to him on his retirement from inter county football.

A great servant to Mayo and the GAA , however he simply had to call it a day if anything to allow the likes of McDonagh and Carr develop further and take on more responsibility next year. BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 27/08/2019 05:09:34 2229634 Link 1 |
What an incredible player. I was in Croke park for the replay against Kerry in '17 and couldn't get over how good he was, with his movement and finishing, one of the best forwards in the last decade. I would love if TSG finally seen sense and got rid of Joe Brolly and replaced him with AM, would be brilliant considering the bitterness Joe has for all things Mayo. The badge kissing I could tolerate it was the running around giving his middle finger to fans, kids included that I can't. A great footballer but if Connolly done what he done what he did the media would have slaughtered him. He got away with a somewhat squeaky clean image in the the press that was not deserved.

Huge loss for Mayo. Andy wasn't blessed with exceptional physical attributes but became the fulcrum of our attack through his supreme footballing intelligence, his never say die attitude and his leadership skills. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 27/08/2019 08:31:24 2229651 Link 1 |
