Same sense of awe surrounded Conor McHugh a few years ago but he hasn't managed to break in. I was speaking to a Maurs man on Sat after the game and he told me that Archer is obsessed with his free taking spending countless hours practicing outside of training sessions. A borderline Stephen Cluxton work rate and search for ball striking perfection. You can really see it bearing fruit. Very good soccer player as well. One to watch out for no doubt.

Always thought McHugh, would struggle a bit at senior, even when he was cracking in a lot of scores he was missing a lot as well and that underage team was a phenomenal team, Mannion, Byrne, Jack, Small, Scully, Costello, Fenton they created so much. You would have picked McHugh out though, to be fair on his scoring numbers, to maybe make more of an impact then he has. Think the ship may have sailed for him. Ciaran is just gone 18, hes in a great spot, i heard he was class at soccer as well and maybe even went across the water to give it a whirl professionally. That is interesting about his work rate. He took of some wonderful frees for the U20's this year, ridiculous ones on any side, any distance, any foot. But at 18 hes in the right spot at U20 and he clearly has a lot still to develop before he looks a Dublin Senior footballer in my opinion, he has an outstanding chance and i wouldn't be surprised to see him training with the seniors next year but play U20. I was going to say i think it will be the POCB break out year next year, it probably will be but he made his championship debut already in the dead rubber up in Omagh. Im really excited about him. Who was on the running for this? And who decided archer was the player of the year? KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 13/08/2019 17:58:02 2225219 Link 2 |
Who's POCB? What position does he play? I didnt realise Archer had another year left. Scary to think how good he'll be next year. Interesting piece from Joxer, he'll need to do a hell of a lot of practicing to take free taking duties odd Dean Rock. Maybe if he offers more from play he'll get his place. Ah come off it he'll be nowhere near Clifford's level. I think he's overrated myself, and no it's not just because he's from Dublin. He probably deserved the player of the year award alright though. Cork's Mark Cronin was probably his nearest challenger.

POCB is a midfielder, 6'7" and has shown real potential. He came on up in Omagh, got a black card against Cork and was overrun by pace in that game I thought. Archer won't displace Rock anytime soon. He needs to work hard in the gym also, like Con has, to bulk up. Interesting comment from Sean C on the SG about Fenton running miles on the thread-mill in Dubai and the fitness work ethic that has been instilled in some of these players.

No it's in the rules that it has to go to a Dub.

He deserved it to be fair. We didn't have one 'outstanding' candidate but had a great team. Same with minors. Be very happy if we have two All Irelands and no player of year awards bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 13/08/2019 23:30:53 2225351 Link 0 |
I still don't know who POCB is! What's his name. Considering Archer has another year at u20 Gavin is probably not too bother about fast tracking him. I assume he'll train with the seniors and play mostly with the u20. That will bring him up to scratch and he'll hit the ground running in 2021.

His name is Peadar Ó Cofaigh Byrne. Plays for Cuala and UCD at college level. Used to be a corner back, has sprung up and now plays midfield for U20s. Has made the senior panel once or twice this year, got a few mins in Omagh. Was named on the 2017 minor team of the year. Decent prospect.

Archer reminds me of Ray Cosgrave in 2002. Don't think he'll be consistent. No COC. BliainanÁir (Laois) - Posts: 598 - 14/08/2019 15:23:33 2225645 Link 1 |

It was mentioned on the panel show that evening that his black card was harsh. Only saw it the once, but didn't he trip an opponent clear as day?

Whelan blamed the ref saying it was very harsh. Looked a clear black I thought. Dublin lad fell and as the Cork lad ran past he was hand tripped. None of the other panelists commented on it and they didn't show it back which was kind of odd. Usually if they are complaining about an incident they highlight the incident in question.
