He showed up plenty of big days. He was long past his best really after that bad injury in 2014, never the same when he got back. I don't think he is the greatest ever either but picking one bad game late in his career to prove the point is really disingenuous.

My Dad always said Sean Purcell was the best he's seen. I always loved watching Maurice Fitzgerald. Peter Canavan was some footballer alright but for me Matt Conner the best I've seen . Very hard to compare players from different counties as if you're born in the "wrong" place the chance to prove yourself on the big stage very unlikely to arrive. catchturnscore (Longford) - Posts: 149 - 02/08/2019 21:20:18 2219902 Link 0 |
Gooch was a phenomenon But for me the player I watched in awe most was Maurice Fitzgerald. People forget that Kerry struggled massively when he first came to the fore. There was also no back door so we were deprived of a lot of his genius. As for a player outside my own team I'd have Matt Connor leading the way His scoring feat in the 1980 Semi Final was incredible ThyKingdomComeThyWillBeDone (Kerry) - Posts: 26 - 02/08/2019 21:37:40 2219908 Link 1 |
Interesting how so many people will go for a forward/creative player. For a defensive player we may never have seen better than James McCarthy. An absolute gem of a player and seems like a great role model for youngsters.

No. Very very good yes. The greatest of all time ? No there is a conversation to be had on who should get that accolade. From my own county graham geraghty and Martin O'Connell would have to be considered. But if I am honest the greatest I have ever seen? Matt Connor. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 02/08/2019 22:07:18 2219919 Link 1 |
I have to say Ciaran McDonald and Diurmuid Connolly were/are both as good a footballer as I have seen. The complete package. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1910 - 02/08/2019 22:21:03 2219922 Link 6 |
James mccartan Ciaran McDonald Peter canavan Maurice Fitzgerald pat Spillane john Egan Jacko Matt Connor and as someone else mentioned Declan Browne also John Galvin Sean cavanagh all fantastic footballers but I suppose gooch had that little bit more genius, he had it all. Sure how could you even pick the greatest Kerry player of all time, let alone in the rest of Ireland?? TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 02/08/2019 23:03:02 2219931 Link 3 |
Impossible discussion due to different eras and player positions. Forwards always get lauded more than defenders. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 02/08/2019 23:49:17 2219940 Link 0 |
A great player no doubt but for me Canavan at his peak was the best player I have ever seen. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1799 - 03/08/2019 06:00:13 2219956 Link 0 |
Someone is in a world of his own but it isn't Cooper! lilylanger (Kildare) - Posts: 758 - 03/08/2019 08:12:24 2219965 Link 5 |
Also Trevor Giles was class, Colm O'Rourke was excellent for meat also, it would have been great to see how Shane O'Rourke would have developed only for injuries. Then your looking Ciaran McDonald Matt Connor Maurice Fitzgerald john Egan pat Spillane Mikey Sheehy Peter canavan, but the best forward Iv seen has to be the Gooch. Iv seen Gooch do things that I thought were impossible his vision and passing and his general unselfishness is unequaled IMO. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 03/08/2019 08:59:48 2219975 Link 3 |

Peter Canavan was no one trick pony, what did Martin Mc Hugh say again? maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1196 - 03/08/2019 12:23:42 2220035 Link 0 |
This debate will go on til the end of time. Different players have different styles and also play different positions so its hard to nail down 1 G.O.A.T. Maybe we'd be better off going 1 - 15 or possibly 1 - 20 G.O.A.T.s for each position? From what i have seen with my own eyes, the player that has and always will be the G.O.A.T. to me is Maurice Fitzgerald. There wasn't anything he couldn't do and didn't do. Kicked scores with both legs, frees with both legs, caught high ball when needed but also dealt with low quick ball into him. He had it all, all the intangibles that separates him from the rest! Just my 2 cents. NarrowBack914 (USA) - Posts: 181 - 03/08/2019 13:26:49 2220056 Link 0 |
Certainly Ciaran and Dermo are right up there. I've seen Connolly do things on a pitch, crossfield balls with the outside of the foot, 50 yard points off both feet, jinking runs and all in a single game, that I haven't seen other players do. His only problem was consistency. But for skill I would put Connolly, McDonald, Canavan, Gooch in the same bracket from my era. Giles had a lovely touch also but just a peg below these lads. If it was defenders only then I would have a few on my list.. Seamus Moynihan Robbie O'Malley Glenn Ryan James McCarthy Joxer (Dublin) - Posts: 4700 - 03/08/2019 13:56:31 2220069 Link 3 |
Joxer, even though it was a different decade, would you not put Paidi O'Se in that group of defenders? Or Seanie Walsh? Paidi for his lack of size, was an animal and excellent corner back.

Yeah Paidi would deserve a spot on an all-time list. I didn't see him a huge amount of him in the flesh but certainly he was uncompromising. So was Sean Doherty from what I have seen but although the Dad had me at matches in the late 70s I've no real recollection of them.
