Are We Too Critical Of Referees

The whole GAA culture around referees is wrong though.
Like it or not, referees get a rule book and a whistle and its off you go to whatever club and its sink or swim as a bunch of savages on the side line berate your every decision, get called everything under the sun, maybe a few slaps for your troubles and then the GAA wonder why we don't have better referees?
If you go into Wexford Rugby club (or any rugby club) and start mouthing off at a referee, you will get told to shut your mouth. At a GAA match you are more likely to get roared on or more people roaring with you.
An attitude change is needed at every level towards referees in the GAA. I will be playing for another 10 years (if they sort out the fixtures mess), after that would I consider refereeing? Not unless something changes."
You are spot on there. How they interact with their other officials should be a vital factor in assessing referees performance.

I do think they need to be better trained. The speed of the game is so high now that referees, even with the best of intentions can not keep up. To be fair to Sean Cleere, he is very, very fit but his fitness is long distance running fitness as opposed to 50/60 metre sprint bursts.

I think what should be done is consistent training camps for referees with specifically designed training plans for referees. Refereeing club matches is not the same thing.

I agree that a 2nd ref has to be seriously considered. I'm not convinced by the technology. I think it will drive a further wedge with the club game. Rules should be for all hurling and not just the inter-county matches just because they are highly publicised."
But is the same technology in all rugby grounds?

100% and we should be standing down linesmen and umpires who get decisions wrong or dont call them when they are perfectly positioned to do it
