TG 4 played a blinder this weekend rhudson (Galway) - Posts: 1478 - 28/07/2019 22:35:39 2217906 Link 17 |
Seconded. And as a Tribesman in exile as it were, they are the only national broadcaster that seems to have made an effort to ensure their coverage is available to people all over the world. Maithú TG4! Agus go riabh maith agaibh go léir! festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3097 - 29/07/2019 00:31:23 2217939 Link 1 |
100% agreed.

No nonsense coverage, knowledgeable presenter and commentators, no ego pundits. TG4 is refreshing Thelonesomegoose (Leitrim) - Posts: 204 - 29/07/2019 08:08:03 2217962 Link 2 |
Well said. well done tg4. What a job they do promoting our games. That Dublin/Mayo minor football game was one of the best games of football I've seen in a long time. ConnollyDub (Dublin) - Posts: 2007 - 29/07/2019 08:36:48 2217969 Link 0 |
Well done TG4. Excellent coverage of underage and ladies football all weekend. Free of charge and available to view worldwide. Mfs (Mayo) - Posts: 251 - 29/07/2019 09:16:39 2217978 Link 0 |
Just a pity the U20 match wasn't available in the six counties. I understand it is a rights issue and not an oversight by TG4. Having said that, it left me free role to watch a spectacular hurling match on RTÉ. OGarmaile (Tyrone) - Posts: 248 - 29/07/2019 09:27:43 2217984 Link 1 |
Be better if they included an English language option, but other than that, fairplay for the coverage. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 29/07/2019 10:40:50 2218028 Link 0 |
I don't think that would be in the remit of a publicly funded Irish language station.

I find it hard to praise them when, despite advertising it, the Tyrone/Cork game wasn't available to watch in the 6 counties. Thomas Clarke (Tyrone) - Posts: 1002 - 29/07/2019 11:05:19 2218047 Link 2 |
Nonsense. Why would they go through all the extra expense for that when it's not within their remit? Plus they have fantastic commentators in Irish. Love listening to them. JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 29/07/2019 11:17:18 2218057 Link 5 |
The death of the Irish language is not something TG4 would be interested in.

Worldwide maybe but not in many areas of Ireland. I pay for what passes for broadband which just about, after a struggle lets me on to hogan stand. I had a link to the Mayo v Dublin match but no broadband speed. Oh the joys of country living. At least I got to cut the lawn!

Well they could just broadcast in English then, a lot more people would understand what they're saying, it makes far more pratical sense.

Agree 100%. I watched both hurling games on the RTE news channel at the weekend, as gaeilge, rather than on RTE 2. The commentators (Brian Tyers, especially) are far superior to those provided by RTE and the co commentators (Pat Fluery is another favourite of mine) are insightful and provide meaningful comments (tactical changes, correct application of rules, opinions on key moments) as opposed to the RTE lads (Duignan apart, who I am a fan of) who just regurgitate back what the viewer has already seen. Given the choice of watching the same game via the two channels, I'll go for the TG4 provided option every time.

You think it makes far more practical sense for an Irish language broadcaster, who's remit is to promote the language and to provide programming primarily in Irish, to just broadcast in English? Some of the warped logic that I see posted when it comes to anything to do with the Irish language is truly baffling at times. JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 29/07/2019 11:58:43 2218099 Link 2 |
Love tg4 but I believe in 2019 to have subtitles as s4c in Wales could only help promote irish language listening to one while watching another is a well known way of improving learning Hitnhurl (Cork) - Posts: 92 - 29/07/2019 12:06:48 2218102 Link 1 |
To me it makes a lot more sense to broadcast in a language that the vast majority of people understand (English) as apposed to a language the vast majority of people don't understand (Irish). I know they have a remit, but they do also broadcast programmes in English, I think a popular sporting event should fall into this category. TG4 usually does have subtitles but I'm assuming the technology is not good enough to pick up the fast-paced commentary.
