Team Of The Decade

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Jesus I've opened a fair aul can of worms here!

Fenton over O'Shea is a fair enough correction on the team I posted. I think Aidan has suffered from being too versatile. Can anyone truly say what his best position is? I always thought Mayo missed a trick by not just playing him at full forward. It's not as though they were badly off at midfield that Aidan simply HAD to play there. I mean you had his brother for starters, Parsons, Vaughan, big Barry Moran and even Keegan could have done a job.

Too often O'Shea has been gassed in the very big games too early. Why not just play him full forward? He's like a wrecking ball and would immediately cause consternation in the opposition ranks.

Away off topic I know but just a few thoughts on it because some of the comments on this thread on him have been quite disparaging and I don't think it's fair on a player who, like it or not, has been an iconic Gaelic footballer this decade.

Who are they then?

Cavanagh ahead of Fenton and Moran and if you say otherwise you're bleating in my opinion.

I'm not so sure. I like O'Shea and thinks he's a gifted player but would he have the mobility - or the engine- that Gavin requires especially in his middle 8 players?

No I don't think he'd be unbeaten in a different team. He is a cog in the wheel. He has a better engine than AOS, he gets up and down, he's an excellent fielder and can clip a point as well. The last couple of years he has been greatly assisted by Howard, the next Paul Flynn in my book, and the rebirth of McCauley this year has certainly boosted Fenton's game also. AOS is an enigma. I've seen him have some great games and rule the middle sector but I've also seen him being overrun, more the latter than the former. He struggles to cover the ground sometimes and I think that's his achilles heel. When he does click though, he can determine the outcome of a game.

Fenton is unbeaten in all Championship games he played, and is the rolls Royce of this fantastic Dublin squad. A proper all rounder, can field, kick pass and shoot off left and right, and his sheer athleticism makes him a superb footballer. I genuinely believe there is an argument that he is the best footballer to ever grace the game. Lots of people won't like to hear it as he's a Dub"
I'm watching the dubs since the 80's and he's the best player I've ever seen wearing a Dublin geansai. Seamus Moynihan was the best player I'd seen previously but Fenton amazes me.

Definitely one of the greatest of this decade. Couldn't have a team without him.

GK: David Clarke (Mayo) - Cluxton's kick-outs revolutionised the game but his shot-stopping isn't really tested given the quality of players in front of him- Clarke, on the other hand, made numerous match-winning saves for Mayo over the decade.
Honourable Mentions: Stephen Cluxton (Dublin), Rory Beggan (Monaghan), Niall Morgan (Tyrone).

RCB: Karl Lacey (Donegal)

'Controversial' Ommissions: Bernard Brogan and Aidan O'Shea - whilst I admire both players, I feel those listed above have delivered more on the big occasions. Cian O'Sullivan, Colm Cavanagh, Peter Harte and Ciaran Kilkenny are all players who don't necessarily fit into traditional GAA positions and I didn't' consider forcing them into a position at the expense of others."
Very nice pick and listing. I wouldn't agree with all but that's the nature of opinions.

One point though, Kevin Cassidy as an honourable mention? You might correct me but did he last play for Donegal in 2011? He practically missed the decade."
Yes - Cassidy last played for Donegal in 2011. Publically, he has said he would have retired at the end of 2011 anyway, but personally, I think he would have continued if he wasn't dropped in the manner he was. When making my selection, I considered players who put two good seasons back-to-back between 2010 and 2019 and Cassidy ticked that box for me (albeit Donegal lost both games in 2010). He was exceptional for Gaoth Dobhair this season also in their run to the All-Ireland club semi-finals (at age 37).

In hindsight, there are a few others that probably merit consideration also: Brian Howard, Niall Scully, Paul Mannion, Cormac Costello (all Dublin); Jonny Doyle and Emmett Bolton of Kildare also.

Agreed on Aiden O'Shea. I'd love to see him get a proper run at FF. He could still drift out for kickouts etc but I think he could have been one of the all time greats at FF.

Good thread, finding out hard to pick a team to be honest.

At least you weren't resurrecting the old Kerry/Tyrone pissing contest from the 00s like I feared when I read the title.

Cillian O'Connor wouldn't get in the Dublin team, no way near the team of the decade for me. His record from play against the Dubs in semi's and finals is poor from play. Mayo play attacking football and their forwards get plenty of chances to shine which he never really has done on the big occassion.

He might have scored 3 points from play in the 2017 final but he missed some relatively easy ones in the first half when Mayo were well on top.

He's a very good player and he's been brilliantly consistent but he's way down the list of top forwards in the country.

Pardon? I've taken into account players playing in big games as the away team. Kerry for example won the Munster Championship this year without any home game. There are lot of factors that need to be considered.

I don't think you should consider them representative of Kerry in general though in all fairness. There's plenty of decent folk who can be more honest in their opinions and don't do the aul online stuff. There the people who know a thing or two about Gaelic football let me assure you now my good man.

Forums are just places for people to post their opinions, don't get so worked up.

If you don't agree and you want to make a counter argument then do so and if you don't then fair enough, but don't take it so personal .

All counties have them catch 22. I just find that these two lads in particular are ruining the forums with the same guff every time. You could have a thread about the rapper ASAP Rocky and they would find a way to blame Dublin for his detention. It must be putting posters off reading the forums when you have these two WUMs crawling from thread to thread spouting their bile. Theyre not representative of Kerry though.
