Donegal V Meath

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

No cute hoorism from me.

Can't see anything except a convincing Donegal win here especially if Donegal get over their habit of trying to see games out in the second half.

In Navan I might have given Meath some chance but in Ballybofey it will be a comfortable home win especially with Donegal well rested & Meath having had a couple of tough weeks.

I agree here. Meath done well to regroup and get a result today but made hard work of it. This against a valiant Clare side who had everything go in their favour the previous week against Westmeath. Donegal have impressed at times but also very sloppy at both ends of the pitch. I think the second half in the league match probably was a true reflection in the gap in class between the sides. While Meath will bring confidence from their previous trip to Ballybofey this year Donegal will have too much especially in terms of the range of scorers. Donegal by at least 4 plus with keeping some in reserve for the showdown with Kerry the following week.

Hope you are right Muck, Meath are no mugs though and they know how to score goals, our defending can be a bit suspect at times when teams run at us, we have that tendency alright if we get a few points up to sit back and contain the opposition, I'd rather we just put the hammer down and kept going like Tyrone did against Cavan.
Going to be a great atmosphere in MacCumhaill park, full house of green and gold.

Should be a good game. Meath like playing in ballybofey, we have been unlucky to say the least, we have added to the team since we last played ,Conlon is a rocket, Shane walsh made his debut today after finishing leaving cert and sure we might as well throw him on, harnan is also back. So it will be a different looking team.
The guys have achieved everything asked of them this year, so they can go out and enjoy themselves, there is absolutely no pressure on them.

Donegal's handiest game and at home, we will win because we have to. No disrespect to Meath but Donegal are rested and ready to give the super 8s a real go. Don't see us having any trouble at all provided we bring the right intensity which I believe we will

Looking forward to it, hoping to make the trip up, I'd imagine it could sell out.

Meath are in bonus territory, getting to the Super 8s is great though because it gives us a real taste of what's to come next spring. To be fair the last few times we played in Ballybofey in the league we were a little unlucky not to pick up the wins but I expect Donegal to be a different animal at home in the championship.

I've never gone into a championship game waving the the white flag, nor do I intend to on Sunday, I think we can win but we are up against it. If Donegal get a run on us, we'll be in deep trouble.

We have to improve drastically on kickouts, we have to hold possession much better and we need to be quicker and more dynamic up front, we can be a little ponderous at times. We have to get consistently good in these departments to live with Division 1 teams.

A must win game. Meath did well and are dangerous when they run straight at a team. They are very poor at the back. Could be a good attacking game. The worst thing meath could do is to sit back, but if they are to counter attack effectively they will need a new keeper. If we can avoid being turned over which they are very good at, we have a great chance. If we labour here or if they get an early goal or 2 we could be in for a shock. Enjoy the game and trip up north meath fans.

Obviously Donegal are strong favourites. They've been excellent so far this year. Nice balance throughout the team. Meath will really have to step up a level. We need to get our matches up right. We need to have the right men on Murphy, McBrearthy, McHugh and Ban Gallagher.

Hopefully Newman is OK and James McEntee is back. I can't see us winning but I would love to see us drag Donegal into a dog fight. Make it a real scrap, make them earn the win.

Oh dear - Donegal are going to win this once convincingly. Meath went well against Donegal in the league but are desperately kidding themselves if they expect to withstand the intensity that Donegal are gonna bring them in a Championship game, especially given that it is in Ballybofey.

This is a given, it will be a dog fight. It may as well be a straight knock out game

Really looking forward to making the trip north to Ballybofey this weekend. Donegal will go in as firm favourites but Meath will take confidence from edging past Clare in a tough, intense battle. We really need to be at our best at the back to curtail the Donegal forwards who are in red hot form this year. We've had two close games this year already, albeit in league football, and I'm hoping on Sunday Meath will put in a good performance.

I agree with most things you say, but we certainly aren't poor at the back, full back line is excellent.

Scully 0-0
Kilkenny 0-1
Howard 0- 1
Costello 0-0
Mannion 0-3
Ocallanan 1-0 ( goal was in last 5 mins)

Very impressed with Donegal this year so far cant see us getting anything here.
I'd imagine donegal will push right up on our kickouts and murder us at midfield . without being overly negative its scandalous how the kickouts are still such an issue for us.
Pattons kickouts are near perfect so we might struggle to get on a lot of ball.
I agree with Donegalman that we are a good running team but its very difficult to do it against the top div 1 teams , donegal will probably clog the middle and stop us from running straight through.
I disagree with you when you say our backs are poor altough the last two games we've conceeded big scores i honestly believe our full back line is real quality and keogan is our marquee player. The bigger issue is when our midfielders and forwards drop back they arent really doing anything and teams can still easily play through us.

I think we'll be better than yesterday and hopefully have a real go but Donegal are at a different level than us at the minute so i cant anything other than a Donegal win by 4+

I'm hoping this over confidence from Donegal fans is seeping into the Donegal panel.

Highly unlikely. We didn't qualify from the super 8s last year, threw it away in the final 10 minutes against Tyrone. So they'll know they need to work their socks off in all 3 games and hope it's enough. Not overconfidence but just confidence and I would say it's merited based on what we have seen from both teams this year.

I agree that the full back line have been performing well but I still think they need more assistance. We leave them very isolated at times. Donegal rarely seem to leave their fullback line exposed. Other than the first 10mins or so against Tyrone they got High McFadden and others back into a sweeper position in front of the full back line. It completely cut out the ball going to McShane. I feel like we need to learn from that.

Over confidence is when there's no justification for your confidence.

Donegal posters are well within their rights to be confident of beating in Meath.

Nothing that either side has done over the last few years suggests Meath are good enough to go to Ballybofey in the Championship and win.

In saying that Meath have had a great year by their standards.
