Longford V Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Last thread I promise.

This may be the most interesting game of the second round qualifiers.

Longford love a tough qualifier draw and they've a good record against Ulster teams too having beaten Down, Monaghan and Derry (three times). Not to mention Mayo in 2010.

Longford give Tyrone a good game in a 2011 qualifier but of all the Ulster teams Tyrone normally bounce back in the back door games and the record against Leinster teams in the back door is excellent.

Unfortunately millerx, i suspect ur prayers will not be answered this yr. Not the team that played last yr. If all the players were available v tyrone, that were playing against meath, id give us a shot. As has been well publicised, 6 first teamers ate not available for one reason or another, but mainly because of football in the states and to be fair another one or two concentrating on their education.

One does not want to discredit the players that have stepped up and kept us in div 3, which was a feat in itself due to mullinalaghtas run in the club championship. Theyve put their heart and soul into it and on a given day are competitive. Alot of them are youngsters, brought into the fold due to players not being available, and theyve got great experience thus far in 2019. If all the missing players make themselves available in 2020, it could be a promotion yr.

Getting back to Saturday, its a big ask but ya never know. Tyrone have real bouncebackability!!!!.....theyre a great side in their own right and are consistently there or thereabouts.

No doubt youll have other things on ur mind next weekend, so best of luck in the leinster final. Enjoyed the craic on ur forum last yr, which i have to say was very gracious, respectful with posts from well versed fans of gaelic football.

The closer it gets to match day the more I fancy Longford being the team that cause the upset this weekend. I tipped Tyrone on the other thread but I am having second thoughts.

I rewatched the Donegal v Tyrone game (i would watch Murphy all day everyday) and honestly Tyrone offered nothing and I would have very severe reservations that they will be able to turn it around to such an extent in only two weeks. The problems seem to run mich deeper than an 'off day'. An off day in my book is kicking a few bad wides / few wrong decisions, not doing literally every aspect of the game wrongly and at a poor pace. They looked disinterested and bullied by Donegal. If Longford get in their face I'm not sure where the response will come from. The lack of leaders stood out against Donegal.

I know the Longford lads on here will spend the rest of the week talking themselves down but the longford players will seriously fancy this after getting an extended run of having the mullinalaghta lads back and having home advantage.

I respect your opinion and you make some valid points but can I ask why you seem to back against Tyrone?

Genuine question

Thanks, I just think that from rewatching the game that they are miles and miles off the required pace and will find it very difficult to turn things around to such an extent that they secure a victory.

I know Tyrone are probably the better team who done well to get to the final last year but I think it is a huge ask for them heading into the lions den after that performance against Donegal. As I said I picked them in the other thread so I have really covered all angles!

I think if tyrone came up against any of the other div 1 / 2 teams that they would most certainly be out on current form imo. The new system (which is excellent to watch when they execute it)will take more than a couple of matches to bed in. Next year / the year after-who knows if they keep at it. They seemed to be caught between two schools of football against Donegal and done neither well. Given that, I dont see it being tyrones year. If they do beat Longford they would need a very kind draw (maybe a visit to oconnor park????) To get a look at rd 4.

I could be totally wrong and the donegal game was a blip but it looked more than that. I accept that Ulster is the most competitive province and donegal seem like they could be the real deal.

How do you think they will get on?

Tyrone I'm afraid will absolutely tank Longford. It will be a plus 10 point game. Pay no attention to province results. It's the all ireland series where Tyrone play their best football and show their hand. Spillane will be eating his words by end of this year . We always enjoy scalping Leinster teams in the back door when we can.

Tyrone's current form in championship this year has not been good. They struggled big time to see off Derry a division 4 team...then performed poorly in the second half against an average div 4 team and then got tanked by a div 2 team. I'm afraid I'm very worried about this game and I think we will struggle again. For me the game is too close to call. If Tyrone do manage a comprehensive win then maybe they have bounced back

You turned over after 10 mins of the All-Ireland Final, Why was it annoying you that a Ulster team was beating a Leinster team.

Will be a shock to the system for Longford coming up against the most cynical team in the country, doubt they will be ready for it

I really dont understand why everyone is slating Tyrone after a 4 point defeat to Donegal when they had their most influental player wrongly black-carded. Cop yourselves on. Tyrone are miles ahead of Longford. They have class all over the field and they have at least 8 top class forwards that will run riot against Longford. Tyrone by 15+ points.

We have had a real up-down year. Some very poor performances in the league (Kerry and Mayo) and a few excellent performances (Dublin, Monaghan, 2nd half v Galway). Our championship hasn't really kicked off. We could sleepwalk into another defeat but it won't be this weekend.

Tyrone are well equipped to navigate the qualifiers. It suits us. However on the big days, I just don't know what Tyrone team is going to turn up.
