Stick to hurling no one playing for meath juniors has a hope of winning a Keegan cup medal

What about all the guys who are in with the Senior panel making up the numbers and will probably not get a game of any real substance ?
The Junior Team should be using some of these players to give them competitive game time"
Wasn't Ben Brennan on Meath junior team?and I know Danny Quinn was too.
Now Brennan is on everyone's starting team for Laois, it took him a while to get into Meath seniors (I recall a ex manager been asked about him and saying he was too firey for county ) but now he is there on merit , and he is 27?? I think could be 28.

I also took the game serious and trained all day long, but never won anything- except kick-outs!!. Myself and Royalldunne won a few cups (they were ones full of tea).

Seriously though the best of luck to all and it is a competition that I would support and it gives a coverage to players which has to be good-hope the weather keeps dry.

What are people's thoughts then on what the Meath Junior team is about - Is it a Senior B Team? Investment in youth? Or a chance to give players from smaller clubs a chance to shine?

I am not saying that the players selected are not worthy of selection but if we are serious about this and if we are use it it spread the net wider with regards to unearthing new talent for the ultimate goal of improving the senior team we need to hold trials, ask All teams to send in eligible players and run the process with creditably
If it's only a throwaway competition that no one give a s#¥t about well then who cares who's on it
But I for one think it should be used to make use a better footballing county

I think that different counties have different selection protocol, however I was always of the opinion that within the county, players were chosen primarily from junior and intermediate level teams. It does give smaller clubs, which are many and their players an opportunity to put on the county jersey and hopefully a few may make it on to the senior squad/team. There is no age limit which is good.

Junior teams are and always have been a great opportunity for players playing at lower grade to test themselves at a higher level. Some may flourish and show potential for Senior squad and some may not. Players who are currently unable to make their own Senior squad clearly fall into the latter so giving them at a change at this level is pretty pointless in particular with regard to progression to senior squad in future and such comments.

What has hurling got to do with anything?

i would say a few lads that played junior a last year with dunboyne / summerhill / wolf tones etc that are now playing on or on fringes of this years club senior team would disagree with you

Complete horse shte
Younger players between 17 and 21/22 trying to break into their senior team at big Club's would be ahead of some of the players on current meath junior team that's a fact
Like I said if the objective of this junior team is to high light the players from smaller clubs then that's fine but if it's to get the best players in the county who are eligible well that wasn't done

I'm sorry but it's far from a fact. We are not discussing lads who can't just get into their club staring teams, they are lads that can't get one minute for their club team over the course of at least 5 champ games so in effect aren't even in the 20+ best players at any senior club.If the senior grade was so strong in Meath than how come our club champs keep losing in Leinster. Every one of the the 26 players players on that squad would be a starter for any senior team in the county and anyone who knows anything about football would agree with that.

It is and should be what it says on the tin. A team of the best players who didn't play in the senior club championship the year before - therefore it consists usually of intermediate and junior club players. Why does it need to be about anything more? Not everything needs to be development this or development that or an eye on the future - its a competition for intermediate/junior players that generally produces good standard of football and occasionally brings to the fore players like Anthony Moyles and Nigel Nestor who were overlooked at underage.

Well done to the Juniors last night sounded like a great comeback. Just a couple of points on ur post. They'd be a definite starter for some senior clubs. Not all of them. Our 2nd team won the Junior A Championship last year. Your telling me there's not a couple of that team good enough to be on this junior panel just because they didn't break into a really strong senior team last year. (Some of them have broke into the clubs senior team this year BTW) No player from the Junior A Champions on the panel at all. Wonder when the last time that happened. Be surprised if it ever did. As someone said if the objective for the Meath Junior Panel was to give players at smaller junior and intermediate clubs a chance of playing for the county well then fine but as far as im aware that has never been laid out so all players eligible should be considered.

As a matter of interest, can you name the players from last years junior team who are better than what is selected.

Personally, taught it was a good squad that was put together well.

Although a worrying issue for me was that there didn't seem to be a proper midfielder in the squad (although what is a proper these days) Robin Clarke would be considered a back and Danny Quinn a forward. No disrespect to either of the lads but would have them down as a midfielder. This is something which also extends into our senior team as well.

Not getting into who should be on the panel and who shouldn't but do you not find it unusual that not 1 player from the best team in the Junior A Championship last year is on the panel. As i said i wouldn't say thats happened too often.

It is unusual alright but it is more unusual that a 2nd team won the championship.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of anyone from the Dunboyne team that would be better than what is there. Without sounding ageist here, the better players for the team where some of the more experienced players, lads who are coming to the end of the road.

"Not getting into who should be on the panel and who shouldn't " translates as "I don't know what I'm talking about and don't know any of the players". You made the point so be man enough to back it up - name the Dunboyne Junior players who should've made the team?

Curious as well as to why there is no Dunboyne/Ashbourne/Ratoath players invited in. Dunboyne won the junior championship last year and no one involved?

Don't understand this curiosity . Meath Hill won the Junior the year before and had no players on it either the year after. Just as the Meath senior team is made up of mostly players from Senior clubs, the Meath Junior team is made up mostly of Intermediate players with the odd Junior club player.

Not sure where this arrogance comes from that second team Junior players from likes of Ratoath and Dunboyne are better than the best players in the Intermediate Football Championship. Whatever about Senior and Intermediate, there is a big difference between Intermediate and Junior.

At the minute it sounds like anybody that is available could break on to the Dunboyne team.
