When Cork Footballers won 3 leagues in a row you would struggle to find a in the city showing those finals. They usually clashed with some Premier League game and would at best get secondary billing on a smaller TV with no sound. I appreciate isn't an attraction for the publican trying to fill his establishment but even if the games were on RTE they wouldn't be given priority of the soccer from ac across the water and it wouldn't even need to be Man Utd or Liverpool. The lesser lights would still be a much greater attraction. tomhealycork (Cork) - Posts: 80 - 01/04/2019 09:49:31 2176881 Link 0 |
Got back to my local at half 9 last night. Could hear a pin drop while league Sunday was on. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11227 - 01/04/2019 12:06:14 2176935 Link 3 |
There's a big well known pub in Letterkenny done up in republican/nationalist regalia, anyway I went in there a few years ago on the day of the national league final, they were showing a Newcastle prem lge game on all the big screens, the national league final was on behind the bar on a 14 inch tv, I couldn't believe it, I told the bar manager they'd be as well take all the republican stuff down and decorate the place in union jacks. At the end of the day it's the punters that will determine what takes preference. If you have a big crowd in who are more interested in the soccer what is the publican to do? GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 01/04/2019 13:37:08 2176975 Link 4 |
Was in Tralee a couple of years ago, Saturday quarter final in croke park clashed with an early round nondescript of the premier league. Soccer on the pub tv and a tough job to get it changed. No surprise really. EPL over the years has turned into a vehicle for weekend pints and betting for a big chunk of the population. Most of the lads down the pub in the jersey would never stand in their local pitch never mind attend a league of Ireland match. Fact. But it is regular and strongly marketed- a consumer product more than a sport. In contrast, the GAA on TV is hit and miss in terms of fixtures outside the league, plus we are constantly reminded in spring that 'it's only the league'. I would well believe it. What was the response?
