Replying To perfect10:  "well why then, particularly in the first 20 minutes, was there an extra man in the limerick full back line?
the reality is,like it or not, every team plays some form of defensive structure these days.nobody is wrong to do it,but i do think the criticism which some counties get for it is ill-informed and poorly considered."
because dublin played with 5 forwards and left limerick with an extra defender....were you not watching the game.?

This is a regular thing on here when debating a sweeper! I had the same argument before when Tipp played Waterford a couple of years ago. It was said that how could i speak about a sweeper when Maher was Tipps free man! A lot of people here never played the game i'd imagine!

played the game at a high club level thanks.different game these days mind.

but sure if limerick didnt want to play a sweeper, why not push up on dublin sweeper?

i will however point out, that every podcast i listen to (gaa hour, irish examiner, irish independent) all said both teams playing sweeper.maybe they all wrong too.

why would a team play with 5 backs instead of the standard 6 when you leave more space for the other team? That's ridiculous.

It's very simple really. If a team lines up with seven backs they are playing a sweeper. A team with six defenders (even if the opposition have only five forwards) cannot be accused of using a sweeper - they are simply lining out with their backs in their allotted positions and one of them will be a free man if their opponents use just five forwards. The guys on the podcasts aren't infallible, Just like the reporters and commentators, they are well capable of indulging in lazy analysis.

I listened to those three podcasts and not one of them said Limerick used a sweeper.

Yeah, how Dublin used it. I'll give 1000 euro to someone who can send me the time in a podcast where they say limerick used a sweeper..

You just need to look at the titles of the podcasts for last week:

Gaa hour: Dublins tactics and Morans huge hit.
The throw in: Why a sweeper is needed to beat Limerick.

If they discussed sweepers they could not have been concentrating on Limerick, who played all their backs and forwards in their own positions, even if they they moved around a bit. Condon made absolutely no attempt to follow his man who went defensive.

Yeah because anyone who knows anything about hurling or football for that matter, knows it would be suicide to play 5 on 5 in your half of the pitch. Is perfect 10 suggesting we should have shoved condon up front to mark their sweeper??
