Pairc Ui Chaoimh a white elephant?, they had 3 Ed Sheeran concerts, 2 Munster Hurling games, Munster football final, 2 league matches, Soccer match for Liam Miller this week, not to mention games in the county championship, probably used more then most GAA Stadiums

Anything built outside the M50 is deemed a white elephant

Redevelopment of pitches & stadia at Hyde Park, Mc Hale Park, Pearse Stadium, Sean Mac Diarmada Park, Markievicz Park, new indoor pitch at Bekan, two new county centres of only hitting capacity once every second year, yeah another stadium is exactly what is needed.

Yep another pitch for Galway, isn't it bad enough people are stuck in traffic in Salthill and a rugby pitch that can't be developed to make the capacity bigger for the future now fairy stories of another headache in Galway

Galway need a "Pairc Ui Chaoimh" style stadium near Athenry and the motorways and rail links, thinking ahead to 2030 WC bid and the population boom in the city and county, Galway has to be on the GAA radar for the future, its the capital of the whole western region. It's a disgrace that they have neglected Antrim also. Demolish Pearce Stadium and keep the name for a new modern venue and posterity with fn lights. GAA need Connacht.

Why call it after a Dublin man? Why not a patriot from our own neck the woods? Hows about something snappy like the 'The MichaelD Presidential Western Municipal Stadium of Light (and Erstwhile Higgins Concert Venue)'? Of course for revenue purposes, commercial naming rights could be appended before or after the name... and maybe both to get max value!

It would be madness to put stadium near Athenry and not much closer to the city with the citys much better transport links
A better location within the city is needed as Salthill is a joke at the best of times with traffic.

There has been serious financial irregularities in Galway GAA. John Hynes , the county secretary has resigned. Galway city will probably develope a new stadium for Connacht rugby. Galway GAA and Galway Utd soccer should ensure that they the pitch is big enough for GAA. A Shamrock rovers situation must not be allowed to develope. The Galway GAA must must must insist any new sports stadium is big enough for Gaelic football and hurling. In the mean time let them keep the Pearse stadium and start saving some money. Slan

A new stadium at the docks (don't know if possible) would have been a Great location. But with a new office block/shopping district being built and big plans for the railway station I don't know if there is room over there.

What's the actual source of this? Absolutely nothing online about it.

could the sale of Pearce Stadium not raise enough money to build a complete new Stadium on the Tuam side of the City where they would be no traffic problems

A venue staging concerts doesnt make it a white elephant.
A white elephant is something difficult to maintain and is troublesome. Staging concerts, charity soccer matches on top of the GAA games doesnt make PuiC a white elephant

Knock Airport was once deemed a white elephant.

I wonder how profitable Croke Park would be without the concerts and corporate events and meetings that take place there every week?

It's no wonder this country ran itself into the ground when these notions of new stadiums continue to pop up.

There is absolutely no need for a new stadium in Connacht. None. The stadiums that do exist already can't even be filled, with the possible exception of McHale Park.

As is well documented already, Galway haven't got any income to even dream about making a new stadium. They could sell Pearse, Tuam, Duggan Park and Loughgeorge along with it and still fall short of the requisite funds necessary to do a proper job.

I've already debated in depth about Tuam stadium before. It will never host another high profile championship game for Galway again as long as it's reliant on the funds of their supporters. Good that it's getting redeveloped as it is, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Hypothetically speaking, even if there was proper access to and from Salthill, people will still find a way to get stuck in traffic going to Pearse Stadium.

Galway County board do not have any money for stadium development. None. So they should concentrate on filling what they have- eg reducing the prices.

Good post FallenStar. I will always have a fondness for Tuam as it was there I saw my first Connacht c'ship game in 1955 - Mayo against Roscommon. Mayo still had stars like Mongey and Langan from their great team of the early fifties. Galway won the minor game (I think) with a big red-headed fellow from Ballygar - Mattie McDonagh - having a great game for them.

Connacht rugby are redeveloping the sportsground, they say they will allow Gaelic games. But I would take this with a pinch of salt. The proposed new high performance unit should be looked at by GAA. And they should also offer Pearse stadium to the Rugby lads when sportsground is being re built.
