JP McManus donates 100,000 to every county board

Replying To tearintom:  "Apparently GAA HQ are absoloutely flabergasted at the method that Jp Mc Manus used in dispersing these funds.

The belief that each county was to be treated equally with this fund was seen as "out there" and this approach was further seen as "preposterous in the extreme" by GAA officials when it was revealed that the smaller counties who need it the most were to receive the same as the stronger counties who dont need it as much with officials in HQ left scratching their heads at the thought of helping each county out to the same level.

Apparently Mc Manus took the approach that there is 32 counties and as they all start on the same grid each year, on the same journey, they all merited the same donation, a move that the GAA have labelled as "setting a dangerous precedent""
What sort of dangerous precedent is being feared here ?

All i will say is, anytime JP wants to give a few quid away to my club or myself for that matter - he can fire away.

Dublin Co Board should make a similar gesture to the other counties

It's a stupid comment.

3.2m is about 20% of the GAA's game development budget every year and nearly 5% of the GAA's annual revenue.

This is a significant sum.

This is incorrect not every county board !?
Fair play JP but yet again us in the UK are forgotten about . Our club desperately trys to fund and support the running of U8 teams all the way up to Senior BOYS,GIRLS,LADIES AND MENS teams. We are run like every other club in Ireland but we have no fixed facilities and have to support ourselves as we get no funding from either croke park or uk sporting bodies.
This money would have been a life saver for us , maybe an oversight by JP but he did make most of this money over here !

you dont have to disassociate yourself from anything . I posted as an individual not as a representative of any county and as Shakespeare once said " methinks he doth protest too much". I have a proosal . Every club in the country shpuld donate €100 of their windfall to Magheracloone Mitchells. Now that would make a difference

Absolutely all the Dublin clubs can go take a flying one, all 215 of them they get nothing from no one anyway except if they in disadvantaged area. 100K won't go too far in the bigger counties

Replying To ballydalane:  "Everyone going on about what a great gesture this is, according to a Revenue statement from 2 years ago, McManus has paid no income tax or capital gains tax in Ireland for the past TWENTY years!

https://www.newstalk.com/Irish-billionaire-JP-McManus-has-paid-no-tax-in-Ireland-for-20-years

So basically he's a billionaire who's avoided paying tax in his own country for decades and so has a bit of spare change to throw at his hobbies. Shur if I never had to pay tax I'd have more money to spend on my hobbies too (but there wouldn't be a queue of people lining up to tell me what a great lad I was)."
He answered this himself by saying he always paid tax on every bob he ever earned in this country. There are several multi millionaires domiciled abroad for tax purposes who gave a bob to any Irish organisation.

And fair play to him for not paying his taxes here, why would he bother seeing that great chucked into the sewer that is the Dail TD's pension! I think hes pure sound out for putting money to an actual worthy cause for a change"
If everyone took the same attitude there would be no money for schools/health/transport/poor people etc the vast majority of taxes go into public services. A small fraction goes into tds pensions.

Didn't take long for a moan brigade to harp on about where JP pays his taxes. The man has done more and donated more than any taxes he would have paid if based here and that's well known.

Anyway he lives most of the year abroad. His taxes would probably have been wasted on a tribunal or a bailout for the bank.

JP has always helped out the Limerick GAA but supposedly he now wants to take Limerick hurling to a super elite level with a 15 year plan in place with Limerick hurling getting colossal financial backing from JP.

At this rate Limerick hurlers will do 5 in a row in years to come!

His Adare manor is going to be on the front of Limerick Jessie's for foreseeable future too.

There is a financial Hurling monster coming in Limerick that is going to be hard to stop!

It is possible to be critical of McManus' tax situation and acknowledge his generosity at the same time.

It's a good gesture from him, and that money will make a difference to clubs, particularly in smaller counties.

The country itself is a tax haven, and there are very few people complaining about that. We are happy to have all these US companies here providing jobs but paying little or no taxes. It's rather hypocritical to criticise an individual for avoiding paying taxes in Ireland when so much of our economy is based on attracting international corporations here who want to avoid paying tax! Well done JP McManus. Pity there aren't more people like you.
