One of the finest hurlers ever to have graced a hurling field. How many have had the honour of seeing him play inter county.

Heard stories about this guy...16 county titles with Toreen, 3 Railway Cups and travelled with the All stars team to the US twice.

There is probably a "Joe Henry" in every "weak" hurling county in Ireland.

Yeah and that's why Martin Fogarty's suggestion about merging weaker hurling counties makes sense. Guys like him should get the opportunity to play the big guns on the biggest stage in Croke Park, Semple Stadium, Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Limerick, Kilkenny etc.

Hard to see it tbh
Im sure like yourself i know of some rural clubs that have to amalgamate at under age levels just to make up the numbers and field teams and they don't last very long and face a lot of criticism from lots within the clubs and can imagine it would be worse at county level ,would be hard see mayo/Roscommon joining up together

He did indeed westfester. Back in 1986 in Division 2 of the league and i think it was in waterford as well. Some achievement when ya think about it. They played tipp that year too. Not sure of the exact score but lets just say it didnt go as well!

Joe only recently retiring from his teaching/coaching role in Castlerea school. Known mostly there for his big success of winning many basketball titles. Was a fantastic hurler back in the day and use to stand out on the Connacht teams in the Railway cup.

Hard to believe this but Waterford got relegated fro 1B and played in division 2 with Mayo. Always supported the team and went to Mayo. Joe Henry single handed just about took us out. No disrespect to the other Mayo players that day. I also had an uncle in Mayo and would visit.

Wouldnt see link up as impossible GJ86. Relationship in hurling communities would be different. Always a good relationship between likes of Toureen in Mayo and Four Roads/Athleague in Roscommon. All share the same passion and struggle being hurling clubs only in a football forest.

I wouldnt have a major problem with an amalgamation and would be interesting to see if it could compete at Joe McDonagh level.

There has been quite a shift in last 10 - 15 years where Mayo have taken over the No.2 position in Connacht hurling from us.

In 83/84 , we beat Waterford, Dublin and Wexford and were in the shake up for promotion to Div 1 in the second half of the last game in the league round. Those days are a long way off now.

you cant merge weaker counties...im all for big improvements in weaker counties but your only going to get a short term benefit from doing this...longterm youl kill the game in them because each county board wont bother with hurling then...im of the same opinion about "team Ulster"too.....this thing merging weaker counties it would be the same as bringing in players from stronger counties to play for the weaker ones...and we all saw how that panned out in Kildare last year where they dropped their adopted county to go home and play club...each county is going to have to do its own bit for hurling and the GAA will have to provide every means necessary

Both football and hurling could learn from camogie and ladies football. Have intermediate and junior semifinals and finals on before the senior games. It would be a wonderful occasion, 6 counties involved, + proper recognition for the weaker counties and their players. The minor and u-20 could be played as a separate double bill

I looked up the records and that game was actually on in Fraher Field Dungarvan with Joe Henry scoring 3 goals.

Yes that is correct. So long ago forgot the places visited that year. Certainly have you a prospective on teams outside the top flight.

Never saw him play but he sounds like a real hurler. It's a shame that something like location dictates how successful you may or may not be. If he was born in Galway or Kilkenny, etc he might have been a household name.

Joe Henry actually won 24 county senior hurling titles rather than 16. A fantastic achievement. He has since won 13 All-Ireland basketball titles with Castlerea School as a coach. Retired this year.

..and i am more than certain if you asked him would he have swapped playing for Tooreen/Mayo for fame in a prominent hurling county he would say no. Therein lies the magic of the GAA set up. May it never change.
