No chance. I'm too young to remember back before the 90's but even in that time Tyrone of the 00's won three All Ireland's, Galway 98-01 won two. Were they better than the Meath team of the 90's? I could go on. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 02/09/2018 21:24:22 2138538 Link 6 |
Better than Tyrone of 03-08? Cavan_Shambles (Cavan) - Posts: 575 - 02/09/2018 21:41:02 2138542 Link 5 |
As much as I love this mayo team I don't think you can say that. For instance I don't think this Dublin team would have won four in a row in the noughties with those great Tyrone and Kerry teams about but for some reason people forget how good those teams were.

Armagh and Cork had brilliant All Ireland winning teams back then too and also suffered for Tyrone and Kerry being as good as they were. The reality is that there is always going to be somebody in your way and saying you'd have X number of All Ireland's if Y didn't exist is a moot argument. If that once in a lifetime Tyrone team hadn't emerged back then that Kerry team could very conceivably have won 5-6 in a row and we might all be saying they were better than the 70's-80's team. But Tyrone were there so it's a daft thing to suggest. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 02/09/2018 22:43:39 2138561 Link 4 |
No never - good team that's all. Same as all the rest who never won an All ireland IrishGael3 (USA) - Posts: 1092 - 02/09/2018 23:39:48 2138584 Link 1 |
The Mayo team of the period in question were probably the best team to never win an all ireland. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4898 - 03/09/2018 00:27:58 2138594 Link 1 |
So he can't say it but you can say it about Kerry & Tyrone? I guess you could look at it another way though too. Would Kerry or Tyrone have been so dominant in the noughties if this current Dublin and Mayo teams were around back then? Dublin had a poor team back then. Kerry in particular loved going to croke park to play them. Sure didn't Tomas o se himself say that. So in my opinion posters making reference to the noughties purely do so to try to detract from this great Dublin team. I'm delighted they won yesterday and hope they do make it five in a row so long as it's not Mayo, Kildare or Cork playing them in the final. Chances are it will be neither. Congratulations Dublin. A truly great achievement. lilylanger (Kildare) - Posts: 758 - 03/09/2018 08:05:46 2138609 Link 2 |
Always will be remembered as best bottlers of all time unless they can put that right next year. Tyrone, Armagh, Galway and obviously Kerry / Dublin in last 20 years better teams. Brolly (Monaghan) - Posts: 4472 - 03/09/2018 09:28:16 2138628 Link 1 |
Yep. A thread set up to try and big up Dublin's achievement in what is a poor era. Kerry have been in transition and still won an all Ireland with their worst team in a generation. Donegal were whipping boys, exiting the ulster championship at the first hurdle 4 times on the bounce, yet in just 18months, Jim McGuinness turns them into convincing all Ireland winners. Yesterday, Dublin beat a Tyrone team that hit a ridiculous number of wides! The same Tyrone team that lost to Monaghan and scraped past Meath. This "great" Mayo team haven't won Connaught for the past 3 seasons, let alone an all Ireland. They lack multiple consistent scoring forwards - something Tyrone and Kerry had in spades in the 00s. 4 in a row will go down in the record books (and I think it will be 5 next year) but take Celtic as the soccer equivalent - are the current Celtic team the best Celtic team ever? Not by a long shot, not anywhere close. Yet they will finally do the 10 in a row IMO. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5018 - 03/09/2018 10:18:03 2138659 Link 4 |
How noble of you to admire a team that not once or twice but three times contrived to find a way to lose games to Dublin that they should have won. Spare me the BS and spare Mayo the empty patronising comment. Barnowl94 (Galway) - Posts: 3150 - 03/09/2018 10:20:11 2138663 Link 4 |
I think Mayo get too much credit for this period. Dublin are a great team in this period in my opinion for the wins over a very good Kerry team in 2013, 2015 and 2016. Kerry would have beaten Mayo in 2013 & 2016 finals. Mayo beat Dublin in 2012 but were easily handled by Donegal in the final. Byanthon (Tyrone) - Posts: 1780 - 03/09/2018 10:25:53 2138674 Link 1 |
Very good team but no, nowhere near it. Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12123 - 03/09/2018 10:40:59 2138679 Link 4 |

Can ye not just discuss the game and leave us out of it for once? This thread is just another opportunity for more Mayo bashing from the usual suspects. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 03/09/2018 11:23:54 2138714 Link 4 |
Seems to me that this thread is just another opportunity for more needless and undeserved "Mayo praising" not Mayo bashing. If I was from Mayo I would be cringing.

They weren't the best team in 2012 anyway, Tyrone and Kerry even Armagh and Galway from that period were better than Mayo, you could argue that Mayo have been unlucky in this period not to win an All Ireland but it's also true to say that they just weren't good enough to win it.
