John Maughan New Offaly Football Manager

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

while he may not have been in the headlines in recent years managerial wise, I am delighted that we have landed a "big name" manager, whether the material is there to work with is an a big issue, it does ramp up the interest in Offaly footballers again within the county, and hopefully beyond. I hope he gets the support of the county board and clubs etc. and doesn't end up leaving with this wrong/that not done/available etc. Wish him well and hopefully it will regenerate Offaly football...

Yes, FairPlay it is a big name alright. I agree that the executive, players, and supporters get behind the new manager. Offaly Football managers can have a short life span as we all know, I hope that John Maughan gets a chance to develop the senior footballers.
Division 3 will be competitive in 2019, but we can aim for promotion. I welcome John Maughan to Offaly and wish him well for the future.

the big issue with offaly football is the same as the hurlers.
are the players there?the honest answer is no they are not and offaly (sadly) needs a really serious re-think as to their approach as a county.
spending money on managers,when the players are not there,is good money after bad.i have seen it in wexford the same.thankfully some good work now being done by diarmuid masterson at underage in particular.

I hear the Wexford commentator below my post, we need to sort our underage, I see at very young underage that is now being addressed (my own young lad is back playing even!!) I still think we need to "land" promotion and a Leinster Final appearance to show young lads whats out there to be gained..I cant see young lads continuing playing in the hope that they make the difference in 10 years time, they need someone to look upto in the short term to encourage them, lets hope it goes well, anyone who comes onto the panel WANTS to play for Offaly, anyone who wont commit or leaves..good luck, off with ya etc...the manager is the manager whatever peoples views of him maybe...done well to get him(Maughan) I think..

I always wish Offaly well. My 2nd county in hurling.
I hope this works. I can't help doubting it though.

Good luck to John Maughan on taking on the Offaly footballers, here are a few guarantees you take to the bank with you:

1. Any team he prepares will be fighting fit;

2. Any team he prepares will be entirely committed;

3. In his set-up, players will play and managers will manage. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on how he gets along with the best players.

4. He will put everything into getting the team right. Mayo players of yesteryear were known, on a semi-regular basis, to receive surprise visits from JM at the front door of their houses, taking them for impromptu fitness sessions at weekends or in the evenings ;)

I always thought JM got a bit of a raw deal from the Mayo GAA public, irrespective of whatever shortcomings he may or may not have had. I hope he does something with Offaly, who have had a bad time of it (in both codes) for a while now.

Hello Gleebo.
Thanks for good wishes for Offaly,there seems to be a lot of goodwill out there. I note your 5 points re John Maughan,and agree with them. If clubs and the executive work with John Maughan, we can make progress, there are some talented players in Offaly.
The football group matches conclude this weekend, the new manager might cast his eye over the players in the various games.

Just wondering what Offaly people would deem as a successful term for John Maughan?

Best of luck to Offaly and John Maughan. He's on Off the Ball now and he's very enthusiastic about this job. Sounds as excited as a kid waiting for Christmas, great to hear.

Saw Tommy Lyons with Maughan and an Offaly county board official in a coffee shop in castlebar a couple of months ago..obviously this is what was being discussed

How do you know he was an Offaly county board official?

He was a very poor manager with Roscommon one of the worst we had if not the worst and at a time he was so well looked after by our county board. His last inter county job was with us also and he jumped ship before we were officially relegated from Div 2 leaving us with a caretaker manager for the rest of the year. The only championship game we won under him was against New York. He blamed the customers (supporters) for him leaving early even though his record was no win in his 11 last games with us.

We would never have got Maughan if it wasn't for Tommy Carr recommending the job to him. Now Offaly have the misfortune of getting both at once.
