Good challenge from Galway, the Dubs faced a rare challenge in 3 forwards who could well start for them in Burke, Walsh and Comer. They put the Dubs to the pin of their collar in the first half. Then in the second half, the greatest team I think we have ever seen found space in that Galway defense that hadn't been seen all year. The pace , fielding and efficiency of scoring was out of this world. The only thing that took from the brilliance of it from a neutrals point of view was the inevitability of the whole thing. dahayeser (Cork) - Posts: 338 - 13/08/2018 10:00:43 2132557 Link 2 |
Notice the zero responses to you positive thread If you had called it "Terrible Weekend Of Football" You'd have a 100+ response thread Unfortunately there are some truly negative people on this site that are only here to vent and say practically nothing positive Fair play to you! Unfortunately your thread will not gain the traction it absolutely deserves. I had my frustrations at how Monaghan approached Tyrone's setup but despite that it ended up being a very competitive game and went to the wire. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20601 - 13/08/2018 10:33:30 2132581 Link 2 |
yesterdays match was indeed a great spectacle and great entertainment. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 13/08/2018 10:48:15 2132596 Link 1 |
Yes, some great football played this weekend. The skills displayed in both games were on a par, or better, than any other era: football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 13/08/2018 11:03:36 2132604 Link 0 |
Take a look on YouTube at the 4 Dublin v Meath games of 91 or the All Ireland semi in 91 of Down v Meath. Inaroundehouse (Cavan) - Posts: 975 - 13/08/2018 11:24:12 2132617 Link 2 |
No just hoofing it forward 50 yards and hoping for the best. What's wrong with keeping possession?

Take a look at the 50/50 hoofs up the field, the brutal shooting & dangerous play. Yes it was exciting to watch but none of those teams would beat the top teams today & wouldn't come within 20 points of Dublin. The game has moved on & hearkening to the past is pointless. There is no doubt imo. Football is ruined, and needs to be fixed. It needs a serious think tank. The key to fixing it imo, is to put rules in place that restrict the movement of players on the field of play. For example, a potential rule could be that teams must retain 6 players in their own half of the field all of the time. Hard to administer, I admit, but the 'football fix' that's required is that radical, because no amount of BS out of Joe Brolly & others in media, will move top teams away from the pragmatics of football's current status, post Tyrone & post Jim McGuinness. Only radical rule change will force them to move away, and potentially improve the spectacle from it's current mostly eyesore status.

Dead right you won't but the game has evolved players and coaches have become smarter. If teams were still playing naively like that would intelligent people not ask why are they not keeping the ball? Why are they giving the opposition a 50/50 chance with every kick out? Plenty of guts and endeavor back then but if a team went out and played like that now they's get tanked and everyone would be questioning how they played such brainless football!

There very few footballers around nowadays that can kick a score like ORourke, Stafford, Linden, Carr , Mason , Redmond McCartan Ect to name but a few

Dangerous play and brutal shooting???? If ye has a forward like McHugh or Bonnar or Manus Boyle or McMullan maybe ye might be in an All Ireland final Inaroundehouse (Cavan) - Posts: 975 - 13/08/2018 13:05:49 2132687 Link 0 |
What's wrong with taking your man on an beating him? What's wrong with taking a score on the run from inside the 45? What's wrong with going forward? Why kick a ball 50 metre back to the keeper just to keep possession? The soccer game scrapped that rule years ago. Our game is just a cross between soccer and basketball where zonal Defending is the norm and players stand where they are told to stand, run when they are told to run. The nothing left to the imagination. Getting very hard to watch. It's only when you see off the cuff forwards like McManus and Clifford make it worth looking at. We do have them. Paddy, Brennan, Mc Niallias are as good as those you mention but defences are a lot better nowadays

There were elements of brilliance at the weekend Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 13/08/2018 13:52:16 2132723 Link 2 |
'Coaches have become smarter'- You are obviously watching a different game than I. Coaches win few matches. Put Gavin over Leitrim or indeed Carlow and see what they would win. Now he is one of the best out there, if not the best. High fielding is nowhere at the level it was in the past as too much time is now being spent by coaches practising 'keep ball' passing it sideways, backways. The guys talking about the standard now are guys who have only seen or played football recently and know nothing else. Football now more like a 7--aside football match. There is still lots of naïve guys playing football - football brains does not improving with running around cones!

But you are not giving the opposition a 50 50 chance if you have the better players.

Im all for the possession game, but it is getting ridiculous.. Monaghan (and im a monaghan man) just seemed to forget to attack and let Tyrone get back in formation, which we all know how hard it is to break them down... Maybe something like a time clock when in possession, i dunno, it just got a little boring and stale...

I thought the first half of the Dublin and Galway match was excellent, the Dubs pulled away in the second half so we didn't have the exciting finish the nuetrals crave. But a good game. Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1876 - 13/08/2018 14:29:50 2132748 Link 0 |
Yeah it's going to take someone to come up with something new. I'm surprised nobody has attempted a high press game rather than waiting till it's on their own 45. The potential rewards are greater. Look at Bielsa in Championship with Leeds playing football that supposedly would never work in that league but it's exciting and they've had two great results so far including a first away win in months. Gaelic players are so well conditioned now this game would be possible.

You need to backwards press. So from ahead the ball in addition to from behind the ball. If you only press from behind the balls the guy can just turn around and play backwards. The connecting pass options need to be marked. The defending team needs to set their line of engagement higher and push up as a unit if it is played backwards. It's tough but it's the next evolution that needs to happen. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4241 - 13/08/2018 16:32:55 2132807 Link 2 |
