I know it's not a GAA sport but what a fantastic achievement by the Irish girls.

Scandalous that the GAA put on two football matches at the same time as the hockey final

Getting my post in before someone starts talking about how hockey is the sport of warriors or some other nonsense and someone else says there's no skill or tactics in it

Irish But Never Held A Hockey Stick?

I've had a hockey player hold my stick.

Hockey is not what it used to be.

I mean the games called hock-ey not puck-ey. I didn't see one hock the whole game.

From Wikipedia:

The word hockey itself is of unknown origin. One supposition is that it is a derivative of hoquet, a Middle French word for a shepherd's stave. The curved, or "hooked" ends of the sticks used for hockey would indeed have resembled these staves. Another supposition derives from the known use of cork bungs, (stoppers) in place of wooden balls to play the game. The stoppers came from barrels containing "hock" ale, also called "hocky".

Watching the RTE news segment on it, boy did the RTE crew lap this stuff up, is it just my imagination or do the Dublin 4 type brigade all talk very funny out of the corner of their mouths in a funny kind of a posh accent?
well done to the hockey ladies, represented Ireland well. I'd like to see a Camogie v Hockey ladies match organised, be a good idea for a charity event. they could play it in Pairc Ui Chaoimh

I heard about the Coleraine girl playing camogie but didn't know there are a few other GAA connections. An amateur team too up against professional players.

Dessie Farrell played hockey for Ireland back in the day. Does the hockey season dovetail with the GAA season?

Sure did. There is a peculiar accent beloved of Dublin4 types, called a 'Dort accent' used by denizens of the South Dublin suburbs.By the way someone on RTE mentioned teams lining up for the anthems before the match.
Since when is Ireland's Call our anthem ?
It was a great achievement, to come through to the final, doing it the hard way. As for a comment that the final clashed with two football games, it was only one game, preceded by a hurling replay.
The Super 8 fixtures were decided long before the hockey tournament, getting to the World Cup final was an unexpected bonus, giving RTE a dilemma. I kept an eye on both matches.

King Con's mother played in nets for Ireland in the '80s

I think one of those girls is a daughter of Derek Daley. Derek was a bit of wild man behind the wheel of a car in his formula racing days

There would be a large number of unionists playing for the Ireland hockey team.

As with the rugby for the sake of inclusivity it is right that Ireland's call be played.
