Honestly essmac i can't really remember anything ever said bad by a rte pundit about amateur players...Maybe that time Joe Brolly went over the top on Seán Cavanagh..but most of it was on the topic of football , well maybe that comment from Joe Brolly were he said "Seán Cavanagh is not a Man" Yes that may have stung a little bit...but wasn't as bad as the personal stuff written about Graham Geraghty during the 90s or Joe Sherdian getting death treats in the post ? look Seán Cavanagh is a man......so he is But i bet a lot of lads on here were giggling like a japanese schoolgirl when Roy Keane was Slating players and personal slurs during his commentary on ITV world cup broadcast ...just saying WhyTheLongFace (Meath) - Posts: 876 - 21/07/2018 15:47:32 2124282 Link 1 |
Marty is the only decent commentator on TV, Maloney is just dry and Canning God help us knocks me to sleep, at least Marty tries to bring a bit of life to games and coverage. riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 21/07/2018 16:16:08 2124293 Link 1 |
O Rourke wasn't on The Sunday Game evening programme. He was on The Sunday Game afternoon show alongside Pat Spillane and Joe Brolly . It was the usual smug, self satisfied, comfort zone stuff that is inflicted upon us week in week out. There is practically no insightful analysis when those three are on the programme. We get endless regurgitation of opinion. Joe Brolly chips in with the latest version of his apocalyptic polemics. The contrast with the hurling analysts could not be more stark. Nor could the contrast with Sky's presentation of football be any more stark. The line up for The Sunday Game evening programme was Colm Cooper, Ciaran Whelan and Sean Cavanagh. Their analysis was streets ahead of the drivel we had to endure during the afternoon. Greengrass (Louth) - Posts: 6031 - 22/07/2018 00:19:58 2124503 Link 0 |
My apologies, somehow I had the wrong Colm in my head, yes Cooper was on the show not O'Rourke and its easy to see the lads currently playing or just retired know more about todays game than those who retired even 10 years ago and are better analysing the game. It's hard to beat the hurling analysis, even the banter between the pundits is worth watching, they aren't afraid to take the mickey out of each other and are well able to take a joke riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 22/07/2018 12:41:32 2124630 Link 1 |
not a pundit but a commentator. Is anyone else sick to the teeth of Marty Morrissey. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5518 - 22/07/2018 14:25:22 2124664 Link 1 |
Each to their own. I know Marty makes a lot of fk ups but I think his enthusiam is great. I know he's old fashioned but I find O'Mahony and Canning fierce boring commentators in comparison.

Aye same here, can't stand Marty Morrisey, he shouldn't be let anywhere near a mic.

Apart from punditry, the Sunday Game shows are quite weak on the nuts & bolts of the ramifications of results etc. After the Clones game ended yesterday, there were one or two narratives only. One that 'Kerry had a lifeline', and two that Monaghan had 'blown it'. Nobody took it upon themselves on the RTE live show to tease out some of the more interesting ramifications of the Clones result :- Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3456 - 23/07/2018 11:49:32 2125098 Link 1 |
Spot on. Joanne Cantwell earlier, at the start of the afternoon show, said defeat for kerry or Kildare yesterday would put them out which was untrue as 3 teams could have ended on 2 points. Also when Kildare were defeated she said they were out which was incorrect as a Kerry win in Clones would have kept them in it. Small enough details but surely as easy to get them right as wrong when presenting a big programme.

I think that sometimes the less a commentator says the better. Kevin Cassidy was excellent in Clones yesterday. He made valuable points around his knowledge of the game. Ger Canning does his best but is limited in his insights. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 23/07/2018 12:28:29 2125129 Link 0 |
Agreed. things like that drive me crazy and it's not rocket science.

There is opinion out there that a guy who has retired a year ago has better analysis of the game in its current format which is pure rubbish. Cavanagh is a good example of that-he predicted last year that Mayo would be beaten by 10 points+ in AI. What goes for analysis is pretty poor, however its one the individuals opinion which is in most cases no better or worse that the average 'joe soap'. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 23/07/2018 13:00:21 2125148 Link 1 |
I actually thought both Cassidy and Canning were very biased towards Kerry. It was all about Kerry. You come to expect that from the mainstream media but I was disappointed with Cassidy.

Does Brolly seem to be a calmer more rational man on the highlights show rather than the live show. Or is it that he has a lot more time for Tomàs's opinions than O'Rourke's and Spillane's? GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7361 - 23/07/2018 13:22:04 2125173 Link 2 |
I thought there was little or no insightful analysis on the Sunday Game last night, just Tomas O'Se and Brolly shouting over each other while narrating scores like lads watching it back in the pub. I don't need to be shown a good score I can see that myself, tell me how that score came about through the movement of the defence and attacks. For Clifford's goal they just showed the clip and narrated over it? And also why was the Liam Miller case brought up? The show is a highlights and analysis show of the weekends games not a general chit chat about the GAA issues of the week. Des Cahill is so out of his debt it is outrageous that he is still anchoring the show. He has little or no knowledge of the modern game and asks stupid questions and try's to make some silly comments. I just ignore Brolly at this stage as he is living on a different planet to everyone else, where as O'Se is losing more and more credibility as aN analyst by the week. From his personal criticisms in his column directed at Cian O'Neill and Kevin Walsh to his yerra analysis I find him very poor with little or no tactical analysis provided. No wonder he isn't going into management/coaching any time soon! Listin to the GAA hour on sportsjoe and you will get proper analysis from people who understand the game.
