You'd be suprised, we might all be in Clones on Sunday. Might leave one or two behind to look after Carrick, Blaney, Ballybay etc.

...funningly enough, if you bothered to check your stats, Monaghan had more wides than Kildare & got 2 pts when goals were on!

Mainly because it's a very young team playing in Clones for the first time against a partisan home crowd.

As a matter of interest how many of your starting 15 against Galway are under 21 yrs ?

4 were 21 or under and a total of 7 playing their first championship game.

Huge pressure on the Kerrymen, they simply have to win. JDF (Galway) - Posts: 322 - 19/07/2018 15:32:30 2123793 Link 0 |
To be fair it's a well supported stat that McManus struggles to score from play in Championship games in Croke Park. Wouldn't be surprised if he had a field day in Clones on the weekend if Monaghan are dominant though.

Galway have similar stats, a few starting are 21 or under the likes of Kelly, Cooke, Sean Andy and Daly are all very young

I think though there is too much made of the Kerry momentary 'capitulation'. In fairness it was not Kerry hyping themselves up. Fitzmaurice very measured before and after. Even the conversation on them has spread to the Kildare Galway thread. Bottom line is Group 1 is wide open and I would be surprised if either of the matches on Sunday are landslides one way or other.

There is big pressure on the boys but there is big pressure on Monaghan also, if Monaghan lose they'll end up having to head to Galway looking for a win and will be in a semilar scenario that we're in now, plus who ever finishes second in the group has only a 6 day turn around to play the dubs.

Then by your own admission your statement that "we have a team of kids 19/20/21 learning senior football" is incorrect. Furthermore your average age is likely to increase on Sunday with the addition of a few more experienced players........rushing too many young players together into your starting 15 is a deliberate choice by Kerry management...if it doesn't work then the buck stops with them...a county the size of Kerry doesn't need to do this ...might work in the hurling province of Munster but at best a big risk in the super 8s. Anyway let's hope we have a great game on Sunday and may the best team win ! Shelbourne (Monaghan) - Posts: 567 - 19/07/2018 21:00:33 2123867 Link 1 |
I didn't realise group 2 winners and runner up spot was decided after 1 game !!

Any leading forward in the country would, as you put it, "struggle to score from play in Championship games in Croke Park" if they were double/treble marked as happens with McManus.

If Kerry try and play the same game plan they did against Cork then they are cooked. Unless they can kick points from between the 65 and 45 they will struggle to break us down and if we turn them over we have some serious hard runner's to brake at speed and get it to our forwards and they will score. Look at the cork game again and look at how bad the defence was on both side's. Cork didn't even try to defend. mon07 (Monaghan) - Posts: 139 - 19/07/2018 22:55:22 2123891 Link 0 |
Does he not get marked as heavily in games outside Croke Park or something?

This is a massive opportunity for Monaghan, an opportunity of dining at the top table at the expense of many peoples favourites. Vishred (Mayo) - Posts: 303 - 20/07/2018 08:03:21 2123929 Link 1 |
Good luck on Sunday Monaghan, if we play to our potential we have a massive chance of winning. Hard to know what to expect from Kerry but it wont be easy. Hon the Farney a great chance to get to the semi finals! Muineachain76 (Monaghan) - Posts: 180 - 20/07/2018 09:04:19 2123936 Link 0 |
I'm not sure I get the point you're making about McManus, I doubt he scored alot more heavily from play away from Croke Park, unless you want to provide those stats? He scores alot of frees regardless of the venue but he wins most of them himself too, he can hardly do much about that. Against Down in Croke Park last year he scored 10 pts but 8 were frees. I don't have to watch it back to know he had a big part in winning alot of those frees, and sure isn't a point worth the same either way?

Being double or treble marked by Waterford, Leitrim or Laois defenders as opposed to Dublin, Tyrone, Kerry usually in Croker ..........bit of a difference to say the least !
