Mayo, The Jimmy White Of Gaelic Football.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

When all is said and done you have to feel sorry and give your dues at the same time to Mayo. They were a very talented group of footballers but just didn't have that core inner belief or mental strength to get over the line. The title of this thread is NOT meant as an insult but to pay tribute to a fine footballing team and county. Like Jimmy White the played their sport in an entertaining, attractive way but ultimately lacked the cold, hard resolve to win the big prize.

Were? They still are.

Second best team in the country beaten by the second best team in Leinster IMO. Leinster football on the rise. On a serious note, Kildare have a habit of flattering to deceive and I wouldn't be surprised if they fall flat on their faces in the next game. I hope they don't but their record would suggest hero to zero. We need a couple of more Lenister teams competing at the business end.

Talented yes!! What a fantastic team, I don't agree with the tag of not quite being good enough, they were good enough to win an All Ireland but were unlucky. The fact they got to two finals against the best team to ever play the game didn't help but remember they lost those finals by only a point. They will still have a very talented group of players in 2019 - and maybe the long break might help them - as a county Mayo are still financially backed to the hilt so everything is there to go again. Mayo don't want any sympathy, as Sam is the goal but when the history is written it will show Mayo as the only team capable of competing with this great Dublin team - the best ever. Dublin have now got a free run to four in a row this year. Whilst Mayo will compete next year it's very hard to see how they can reinvent themselves, especially as I expect Kerry will have fully arrived by then, and Galway will also be much stronger. So yes I can the Jimmy White comparsions as sadly it looks like another great Mayo era will end without the ultimate prize.

They lacked maybe an extra out and out forward, that is all, but overall a fine football team. The only team that could give Dublin a game the last few years. They probably need a bit of fresh blood now. Their U21 winners haven't really given them the expected shot in the arm but you still wouldn't write them off yet. They are a great football county and I'm sure they have the talent within to regroup and come again. Tom Parsons couldn't make the panel a few years ago but forced his way on through performances in their Intermediate championship. If they regroup properly and develop a top forward or two, there's no reason why they can't land the big one in the next couple of years.

Have Mayo died or are we giving up football???

That's the vibe I've been getting since the defeat...especially the giddy texts from Galway fans .

No way, we will be back. We have had 7 great summers following this team and while we didn't land the big one....we made memories and friends that last a lifetime.

Life is tough and you don't always get what you want....I'm biased but I think the championship I'll be a poorer place without us.

Well done Kildare...the better team on the day/

Im hoping Mayos obituary's are a little premature. They have played a lot of football, late into the summer for a long time an early summer exit may help them regroup, they are human after all. They have also had terrible luck with injuries this year.

This Mayo team has had 16 months rest in nearly a decade of football.
This season they will get 10 months off.
Enjoy it lads , and their will be changes , but anyone who thinks this squad is finished will be sorely mistaken.

In fairness

Jimmy only lost 6 finals on the bounce

Jimmy must have been tearing his hair out with those loses.
Soon as he finished the hair came back.

To be fair it's good for them to be on the out side for the rest of this championship.
They seem to be in a maze. So many appearances in All Ireland finals and semi finals over so many years and always ending up 2nd best.
Time to take a rest, a reality check and try a different plan. Come back with a freshness.

I wouldn't go writing Mayo off just yet. As long as there isn't an exodus of lads leaving the scene, and I don't think there will be, then there's every reason to think they will be back. They will hopefully have Parsons and O'Shea returning, blood a couple of young lads into a team packed with experience and a new freshness they probably haven't had in a long while.

I'd agree they were devoid of any luck, deserved an AI or 2.

that was said at the end of last year .. and the year before.

but them experienced lads will be another year older, injured players may be back but what if it's someone else injured next year ??

they haven't got the legs they're done. The older lads are staying on too long they are actually hindering mayo moving on and staying in this era of nearly men.

Dublin and kerry are continuing to remain competitive while evolving. The managers inability to play youngsters and let them gain some valuable experience and continuing to rely on the old guard is one reason why mayo looked absolutely goosed and it'll only get worse.

If dublin or Kerrys pace got a chance to run at mayo in croke park, after being out for weeks in a row + the super 8s, and injuries, mayo would've been smashed around. instead it was kildare..

Ah yew that is stretching it and very selective. I know we are neighbouring counties and serious rivals but this forum among other fora would show most Galway football folk to be less likely to stick the knife in unlike some other counties. Very few Galwegians dancing at the crossroads at your loss. Most are more concerned about our own lads and what we face in the coming weeks.

U21 2016 was far from a vintage year. That Mayo U21 should have lost to our injury hit team in the Connacht final one of the biggest smash and grab wins I have ever witnessed and then in the AI series there was no side of the quality of Tyrone 2015,Dublin 2012 or 2014 most of the best players of that Mayo U21 team have no played senior. Its not so much in need of fresh blood but they need for like for like replacements for their 30 year old players that have been the warriors the through leaders for them. Once they are gone they will leave massive voids to fill.

If Dublin had to play away from their Home Venue, Croke Park, May would have won a few AIs. Home advantage for the Dubs in all important games decided these 1 point losses.

I hate these sneering threads especially after great teams get beaten
No respect for these lads
Beating Dublin in semi in 2012
2013 QF job on Donegal
2014 semi replay loss to Kerry
2015 semi replay loss to Dublin
2016 QF job on Tyrone, Final replay v Dublin
2017 SF job on Kerry, Final v Dublin
They have had us eating our nails for years
They were involved in lots of the amazing games over those years
The break will do them the world of good
We in Galway should focus on our own business now and try and win a first championship match in croker since 2001!!!!! FFS
Then focus on dealing with Mayo when we meet them next year
Anyway, I have nothing but respect for them
