As the Cavan club leagues reach the half way point, what way are things shaping up in the 3 divisions? What teams are doing Well, who have disappointed so far? Who will eventually win out, and does the league have any bearing on championship form?

On last years league form it had a bearing on championship. Weather that happens again this year remains to be seen.

Castlerahan lost last night to Cootehill who are fighting relegation from the DIV 1 league.

Ramor recently lost to Killygarry also. Cavan Gaels remain unbeaten in Cavan from 2016.

Kingscort shippped a heavy defeat to the Gaels last night.

Crosserlough won by a few points against Arva.

Not a very competitive league so far.

Gowna picked up a few good results along the way. Lacken are competing but not getting as many results as theyd like.

Balinagh starting to see some form beating killygarry last night.

Overall. Poor standard in Cavan club football.

Feels like the ACFL has turned into the breffni league and nobody really cares, which sums up cavan football at the moment. I hear Ramor lost to killygary with only 3 lads playing who won championship in 2016. Gaels have the right idea and keep it consistent. Cootehill have been unlucky in games and will improve for championship. Gowna surprise package, very young and fit. Castlerahan have suffered in the league due to losing Flanagan Reilly Kiernan and Mackey with the county and McEnroe in Aus. Dont look too much into the league if im being honest. When is league final played? Or are clubs even bothered????

You cant really look into the league at all as EastCavan said. Gaels unbeaten again with nearly same team playing week in week out. Dont know what is happening with Kingscourt but Faulkner is a loss when county players not allowed to play and Dillon gone to the states for Summer. Castlerahan also only had 3 players that started 2017 final playing against Cootehill. On a separate note did anyone here what went on in Arva Crosserlough match?

Referee let a lot go early on and lost control. Therw out reds then but the horse had bolted. As a result a player ended up with a bad injury.

Same thing in a Gaels Ramor game months ago, ref bottled the early reds which would have nipped it in the butt and as expected lost control. How do we improve the standard of cavan football if the refs are so bad?

This young lad Conal Sheridan from Arva got struck on the blind from behind. He is currently in St James's hospital waiting surgery to his jaw for multiple fractures.
Players need to be protected be they county or not and if a referee cannot control a game he should not be doing the job it's that simple.
This young Sheridan is a lad that the County management ignored and he is a class player along with many more ignored by the county.

Heard about this and I also heard that the lad who did it has previous.

From what I've seen of Sheridan, he is a stirdy man but not one for conflict. He is maybe Arvas best player with Ciaran Brady and this sounds like the act of a complete coward. Hope he makes a good recovery from a very vicious incident.

Few predictions as the leagues are taking shape/heading towards the business end of things

D1

Winners - Gaels comfortably
Relegation - Cuchulainns and Arva

Fancy Cootehill to pick up a few wins and Conal Sheridan will be a miss for Arva

D2

Promotion - Mullahoran and Belturbet

Mullahoran the best team this year. Lavey and Laragh probably play better football than Belturbet but I think their tight defence will get them over the line. Should be close.

Relegation - Drumalee to go down automatically. Ballymachugh a tentative selection for the other spot. Will run all the teams above them close in a playoff game.

D3

Killinkere & Killeshandra. Marginally ahead of Kildallan who still have to play both and I expect to run both close.

Championship Predictions

Senior
Gaels to win. Ramor to put up a better challenge this year, and my dark horses.

Intermediate
Mullahoran. Not expecting them to beat teams well but to edge through a few close games. Loads of worthy challengers.

Junior
Denn. Again not too far ahead of the chasing posse but might scape home on experience. Knockbride & Killinkere to be in the reckoning.

I think the county board should introduce a relegation from division three in the League into Reserve Football.
Would certainly make the Division 3 more exciting near the bottom and something to play for..

Daddy obviously doesn't know best. That make no sense, Div 3 is be the bottom grade, can't go lower.

They could go from Division 3 to Division 1A which effectively is the 4th tier. They relegated Maghera from Division 3 a few years ago, and also Templeport but they kicked up and refused to go down.

I would like to see the league system reverted to 4 DIVISIONS OF 10 like it was a few years back. I don't see why they changed this, have 9 important league games with county players available for them all. This idea of clubs playing without county players is BULLS##T. The clubs are producing these county players at the end of the day and deserve to have them for games.

Well you have obviously never kicked a ball in your life or youd know that Reserve League Division 1 would be fourth tier and would maybe suit the likes of the weaker teams to get competitive football in,,, its not fair to ask a team to go out every weekend to be bet so a compromise should be made that two teams be relegated from division 3 and 2 teams promotoed from Reserve Division One,,,dont know how the weaker clubs would feel about this but would certainly make things more competitive for them.

A few years ago Maghera opted to play in reserve division 1 instead of Div 3. They were hockied in every game facing the reserve teams of big clubs like gaels and ramor.

It certainly was of no benefit to them. This year in Div 3 was no better for them. What would benefit the likes of maghera is that the players from their parish would actually play for them and not the neighbours !!

Football is in decline and the co board and croke park need to sit up and take note.

Thanks for that i had no idea they played in Reserve League already, but it surely begs the question and proves my point if they were been bet in every game in the Reserve League how would they compete against Division 3 league teams which is even stronger than reserve. I still think the county board need to have a relegation from Division 3 and promotion from Division 1 reserves, it would then make every grade relegation / promotion and give some teams something to play for...
If playing reserve league was off no benefit to them how certainly dont see how playing Division 3 football is benefiting them. In all fairness i dont think you can blame the players at all if they have two options 1 go out and lose every game or 2 go out and join a neighbouring parish and have a chance of even been competitive.

I would be fairly certain a number of Div 1 Reserve teams would beat Div 3 teams provided they had all available players. The answer is Maghera are prob better off in Div 3 than Reserve Div 1. Just look at the Gaels Reserve team that topped Div 1 Reserve League. Martin Dunne, Niall Smith, Barry Fortune, Declan Meehan, Paul Graham, Andy Graham have all featured predominately for them.

There appears to be confusion among some of you on here so in attempt to educate. Ramor Aontaoithe (the clue is in the title) were a gathering of the small clubs of the Parish of Lurgan (Maghera , Virginia Blues , Lurgan possibly others) into a parish team. Munterconnaught and Castlerahan is one parish again two clubs this pattern is repeated across the county of Cavan with few exceptions. Crosserlough and Killinkere the ones that spring to mind .

If we want Cavan to maximise playing resources we need fewer Clubs

No one wants to grab the bull by the horns so nothing is done to change this despite it being obvious

when did this happen. I cant recall it ever happenning. I do recall however some reserve teams or junior B teams playing in div 3 and even in Div 2.

And the names you mentioned above will be playing with their senior team come county final day.
