Hurling Only Parishes

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am looking to see what parishes/villages/townlands in Ireland play Hurling only?
As in Gaelic football never existed not has the potential to ever exist.

Some areas have a really strong senior Hurling f team but might also have a junior c football team so that doesn't count. I am talking about areas that have zero Gaelic football, Hurling only!

Basically most of Kilkenny. In fairness there are a few in a number of counties I imagine where Gaelic Football is considered the root of all evil.

Nonsense.

Between today and Thursday, at least 21 clubs in Kilkenny will be playing football fixtures at various levels. That's half of all the clubs in Kilkenny.

I'd hazard a guess that most Kilkenny clubs at least enter a football team.

Oulart the Ballagh in Wexford is one. Rathnure used to have a junior football team, not sure if they do or not anymore. All other clubs are dual, with the exception of Wexford town clubs who are hurling/football only but you can play both games if a player in the town.

I stand corrected. More of a jest comment. My point is some hurling dominated clubs will do anything to prevent football getting currency (my own county included).

Most of Limerick would be or was dual at some point.
Was there ever football in Doon, Dromin Athlacca or Glenroe.

I'd say that is hard enough to define. Plenty of Hurling only clubs but there will also be a football club covering their parish. example in Tipp is Ballybacon/Grange (Hurling club) and Ardfinnan (football club). Between the two clubs they cover the 3 parishes of ballybacon, Grange and Ardfinnan.

Or nearer to home.. Setanta Hurling club and Red Hugh's for football in Donegal

There's a good bit of hurling in west county Meath, there's no significant absence of football in the county but you'd have a few places where say one town/village has a hurling team but no football team and a nearby town/village has a football team but no hurling team.

I'm not really involved in Gaa anymore (apart from being a supporter) but off the top of my head, the following towns/villages are hurling only in Meath: Drumree, Kildalkey, Killyon, Kilmessan, Kilskyre, Kiltale, Rathmolyon

Basically, if you have 'Kill' in your name you're not likely to play football.

The three Ards clubs in Co Down don't play any football at all.

We dabbled in it for a while but not for a long time.

Yeah North Antrim in the hurling but South West in the Football given there are only them and Dunloy in North Antrim who play underage football - Ballycastle don't have juvenile teams so only play in the All County Leagues at Senior.

Toreen are the only all-hurling club in Co. Mayo, although they are quite close to their great rivals in Ballyhaunis (dual club) and several hurling outposts in West Roscommon.

Not sure if you could designate them "parishes" as such, but there are three hurling-only clubs in Co. Europe, Dresden Hurling, Stuttgart GAA and Darmstadt GAA. Darmstadt are an interesting case as they have no Irish players, being an all-German side based out of a local university.

Bothered? They play inter-county football at their level. They lost in to Meath in the All Ireland Junior Semi-Final last year:

And you a Galway man sneering at football in Kilkenny. Why are Galway playing senior hurling in Leinster?
