The greatest sport in the World is hurling. Living our side Ireland for over thirty years nothing other than ice hockey comes close. One a field sport the other an indoor sport. Both demand a discipline that is unreal. The players of both seem to have such a respect for the game and each other. If you want to challenge for excitement I am willing to listen.
Up the Deise, Tipp, Rebels, Yellow bellows,Cats,Tribes men and all the others.

Oh Canuck you've just set yourself up for a spate of "I hate hurling/ hurling is boring" responses. Granted it has become a lot more defensive orientated in recent years and there are far too many ruck- like shemozzles in today's game than there should be, and also the sliotar is too light which is contributing to this issue as well as to sidelines being scored from the half way line (which shouldn't happen either).

But I agree with you. I'm actually voting with my feet today....despite being from Galway I will be in Nowlan Park rather than Croke Park as the entertainment value and excitement is likely to be a lot higher in Nowlan Park.

I'd say you will get a big surprise later today!

Don't see why these posts are always started hurling better then other sports. People like different sports. Hurling would be well down my list of favourite sports but I would repect people who love it.

Agree everyone has their love of sport but the 4 quarter finals and one semi so far have been brilliant. Every team scored 20 plus times. What a summer we have 8 possible winners where as football realistically only one.
Hope we don't have one sided finals today in the football.

Why do Hurling people feel the need to keep saying Hurling is the best field sport in the world? Insecure about your game?

I don't think eight counties have a realistic chance of winning the All Ireland . I think the new format will put increased emphasis on the depth of counties squads. I will be surprised if the winner comes from outside Tipp, Kilkenny or Galway . Having said that there has been a leveling of standards and a great summer of hurling awaits . As for the four hurling quarter finals being brilliant, I was at the Dublin Tipp game and it was nothing more than a stroll in the park for Tipp. I agree that there will only be one winner in the football. The football championship is now where the hurling championship was for long periods of the noughties. We are watching a Documentary blue team which is one of the greatest if not the greatest team to have ever played the game. When Kilkenny were at their best I sat back and enjoyed the privilege of watching their brilliance. I look forward to doing the same this year with this Dublin team. We have had some magnificent games involving themselves and their rivals over the last few years . Hopefully we'll have more of the same this year.

Was Muhammad Ali the self porclaimed 'greatest' insecure? Whats your logic? People whow love Rugby think rugby is the greatet. Just read Neil Francis if in doubt.

Anyone suggesting there is only going to be one winner in the football really hasn't a clue.
Have you not noticed how little has been between the teams in the last few finals.
Certainly less than in the hurling finals.

I'm afraid so yew_tree, when people are insecure they generally seek re-assurance.

Unrelated issue - I typed the word sex in a reply here earlier but HS thought it was too extreme to post, just wondering will it get through this time....sex, sexy sexy, sex sex sex.

Sex ;-)

Not a very good comparison, since in boxing there is a definitive "greatest" boxer at any given point in time, and this is determined by winning boxing matches against other competitors and obtaining belts. Claiming to be the greatest boxer is a claim of ambition that can be challenged with reality.

But there's no inter-sport competition to determine the best sport, and any claims of a single sport being the "greatest" is very much based on background and opinion. Claiming to play the greatest sport does come across as an insecure clap on your own back since you know you can't be proven objectively wrong.

Despite being more of a hurling fan I do find the constant need to declare hurling to be the best sport on earth to be ridiculous.

It's second only in annoyance to the desperate craving for the approval of random foreign people watching it; where GAA news outlets get excited and run actual articles when an someone in America or the UK with 7 twitter followers tweets ""Just saw a video of hurling, what a crazy sport the Irish have lol". It's pathetic.

Never said there are not other good or great sports. Expressing an opinion, getting off the fence and telling it as it is. The greatest of them all speaks for itself over and over. A hole in one in golf (great sport) requires some divine intervention. What Ronan Maher did last night demands unbelievable skill.

The point that is being made to you is that most people when they express an opinion on a particular sport don't preface it by saying it is the greatest field sport in the world . It seems to be a characteristic of hurling people . There is no need for it .

You're right! Went to the match with a Wexford man. Luckily he knew it was on in Wexford Park so we did go to the right venue! Poor game really. Wexford were very disappointing. The football probably provided better entertainment today

A lad clearly inspired and made proud by the beauty of a game that is unique and thoroughly Irish, posts a warmhearted paean on a GAA website to share his love of the sport with likeminded Gaels. And what happens?

A bunch of big ball bullies show up to accuse him of insecurity.

The irony.

Nah you're missing the point, I love hurling, I think it's a great game to watch, it's just that the fans are a bit overbearing sometimes. They're a bit like that parent who keeps banging on and on about how brilliant their own children are, it's hard to listen to and nobody else gives a shít!

If it causes you so much distress, then here's a friendly bit of advice: stay away from hurling threads. No one is making you read them.

Tighten yourself and spare us the nonsense. I've been watching hurling for decades and love the game . The point that was made is correct .
