Claregalway crazy turnaround

(Oldest Posts First)

I mean really, could Claregalway's semi final vs the Sligo champions not be played during the week under floodlights? It's a joke that players have to play 24 hours after winning a county final, they can't really celebrate not to mention increasing the risk of injury and of course decreasing their chances of winning the match.

I've never been in this situation but what happens if they just boycott it? Or if both teams reach an agreement to boycott? The GAA only do this because nobody does anything expect go ahead and play anyway

If the match isn't played, the Connaught Council would lose a reasonable amount of money in gate receipts, therefore if Claregalway were to refuse to play the match, I assume a walkover would be given to the Sligo team and most likely a fine imposed on Claregalway due to lost gate receipts, if both teams refuse to play, there would be a possibility that both teams would be thrown out of the competition and fines imposed. It's a difficult one, the game could be fixed to a mid week fixture under floodlights or played next weekend.

There are more than likely players from both teams who live and work in Dublin during the week who would struggle to make a midweek game anywhere in Connacht. The date the Galway champions were due to play in Connacht has been known for months, Connacht Council are absolutely right to insist the schedule is stuck to and it goes ahead today. It is tough on Claregalway but the blame lies with the clubs in Galway who delayed the championship with appeals.

Why not play the match next Saturday? What is the point of the CPA being in existence at all if they are not getting stuck into this issue? This is a player welfare issue. It's not Claregalway's fault that there was an issue in relation to a player's eligibility who is not even from their club, they shouldn't be penalised because of it.

are clubs not entitled to appeal if they think an illegal player has been played?

Most complaints on here about the club game are that fixture lists are never stuck to and players don't know when they will be playing. When the Connacht Council insist on a game being played on the date it was fixed for months ago there are complaints as well. I can see both sides of the argument but it just shows what a thankless task being a GAA administrator really is.

I don't know the full details but i believe it was an appeal based on a photo showing one of the opponents possibly playing for a team in America earlier this summer. Sometimes clubs would be better served accepting their beating on the field of play and putting their efforts into improving for next year rather than trying to win games at meetings. They lost their appeal but delayed the championship needlessly. They are a great club that have achieved a lot in very difficult circumstances but in my view let themselves down badly with that.

Hopefully, the restructure of the championship structures next year will ease pressure on fixtures being played off no matter what the circumstances and we won't see a repeat of a scenario where club players who have made big sacrifices over the last 8 months can't even celebrate winning a county final and are then forced to play another match 24 hours later.

So why have rules at all? Once again we seem to remove all the blame from the clubs actually breaking the rules. From my understanding the 'appeal' in question delayed the county final by a week - a county final replay would have done the same.

So maybe we need to get clubs to stop breaking the rules and have the county boards have a more a transparent decision making process when THEIR rules are deemed to be broken.

All the talk about the 6 day turnaround being too much in the inter county game......but the club players, ah sure they don't matter like.

This sort of stuff happens every year. I don't think going straight into club Provincial championship after county is a good idea.

Plus club under 21 gets played now.

Leave Provincial and All Ireland club until February and March. Play intercounty preseason in Feb and March. Proper intercounty season starting in April.

A great win for Claregalway in a match played in very difficult circumstances.
