Galway no.13 Bernie Forde if I'm not mistaken. streaker (Galway) - Posts: 497 - 03/10/2017 19:51:17 2052811 Link 0 |

Don't think there was such a thing as a MOTM award in 1980. It was a Sunday Game invention --- and The Sunday Game did not exist in 1980 AFAIK. But if there was a MOTM Bernie Forde most probably would have got it. PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 1904 - 03/10/2017 21:25:00 2052846 Link 0 |
As Joe McDonagh was starting into the Wests Awake Micheal O'Hehir was saying he had no doubt the Galway goalkeeper was man of the game but I don't know who actually won it. Look at the speech and song again for confirmation, it would do anyone good. Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 03/10/2017 21:45:51 2052858 Link 0 |
Considering Eamon Cregan, then thirty five, scored 2.5, the goal from play a thing of true beauty, he should be considered.

The Sunday game was out in 1980 alright. It was first broadcast in 1979.

I watched it all from the start again. There's no doubt Conneely had a blinder. From a Galway point of view it was a toss up between him and Forde for MOTM. Hurling back then was such a different game to what it is today. The game itself was very frantic with lots of ground hurling. I had forgotten that the linesman placed the sliotar for lineballs and that the player taking a line ball didn't touch it. Wasn't at all a dirty game but there were a few tackles in it that would be straight reds today! But there was no play acting back then -- fellas just took the knock, got up and got on with it. And remember big Mike had a nightmare against Offaly in the semi final which made his final performance all the more satisfying. Eamon Cregan also had a noteworthy performance.
