Please see article from yesterday On this day 70 years ago...... about Cavan's Famous win in the Polo grounds. Everyone knows about it but one line caught my eye:
"...........and their captain John Joe O'Reilly lifted what was then known as the Gaelic Football Cup at the Manhattan baseball venue."

The Sam Maguire cup was first presented in 1928 to Bill Squires Gannon from Kildare. Any old footage I've seen from the 40's with Micheal O'Hehir commenting refers to the Cup as Sam Maguire.

Surely this is an error in the piece referring it as the Gaelic Football cup as was known then?

When and where was the article written?

If written for an American audiencem, they may have just used such terminology to help explain the competition.

Yeah pretty sure that's wrong.

I remember seeing pictures of John Joe Reilly with the Sam McGuire after the game and think I've seen a pic years ago of it being transported across the Atlantic by boat before the game.
