League and Leader Cup

(Oldest Posts First)

Should they not play the league and leader cup off before the championship gets under way. Very sickening for a team to be knocked out of championship and then turn around to still have to play another 2 or 3 league games and then train and wait for a leader cup. The way it's gone the leader cup means nothing now anyway!

I see that St Columba's Mullinalaghta won the the League last week.
They played Clonguish who drew the game with them in fairness to them, missing key players like Ciaran Williams,Stephen Watters ,Paddy Dowd and Ronan Sweeney.
Mullinalaghta having had a hard week of celebrations after winning the senior championship the previous Sunday.
These two team are now meeting again this Saturday evening in the Laurels in the Leader Cup semi Final I would say St Columba's would come out on the winning side of this game with Slashers winning their pairing against Killoe.
Given an Slashers V St Columba's Mullinalaghta Final.

So the farce that is the Leader Cup continues. Longford Slashers played their last league game on the 10th of September, they then had to wait until the 21st of October to play the Leader Cup semi final and now the Leader Cup final MIGHT be played on the 19th of November depending on St. Columba's progress in Leinster. That will be 1 competitive game in 10 week's if the final actually goes ahead on the 19th of November. How is this allowed to happen year after year ? It's a joke.

Slashers seeing that they did not makethe championship knockout stages obviously sees the league as theirt only avenue to success. With St Columbas now concentrating on LeinsterS;ashers should be favourites for the Leader Cup as they are concetrating on it siince early august

Yeah of course Slashers are favourites against the winner's of the last two county finals and last year's Leader Cup Winners. Some people really haven't got a clue.

Congratulations to St Columba's Mullinalaghta on winning the treble , it must be said Slashers finished out the first half the much fitter and stronger team and was 3 points up with a score line of 0-9 to 0-6 going into the break.
But the north Longford club showed real class and scored a total of 1-11 to Slashers 3pts (2f) , in the second half.
Rian Brady was very unlucky not to get another goal hitting the side net in the second minute of the start of the half.
They definitely left the Leinster game behind them the previous week against Lomans, but this half parish club as they are now known as can be very proud of themselves, with a population of approx 450 people and primary school 35/38 pupils it give all clubs hope and believe that those childhood dreams can come through.
Winning the treble is an outstanding achievement with last club to win it was Manning Gaels 1997 .

Last club to do it was actually Clonguish in 2003. Before that was Fr. Manning Gaels in 1997, before that was Slashers in 1991. The Division 1 title came into being in 1990 so that's where time begins on a triple stat.

I stand corrected Arcadia Clonguish did win the triple in 2003, they also played up to the Leinster club semi final the same year losing to St Brigid's in Dublin by 2pts.

Indeed. From what I can gather 4 Longford clubs reached the Leinster Club Semi Final on 6 occasions... Clonguish in 1973 & 2003, Fr Manning Gaels in 1998 (lost by the controversial point that wasn't), Killoe in 2012 & 2015 and Mullinalaghta in 2016. Its a crime that a Longford club has not yet appeared in the Leinster Club final.
