Was the right thing to do... we need someone new with fresh ideas now green and gold (Donegal) - Posts: 105 - 31/07/2017 20:23:09 2026907 Link 0 |
I was never a fan of his either as Donegal manager or Kilcar manager & I think he has done the right thing. MuckrossHead (Donegal) - Posts: 5028 - 31/07/2017 20:28:14 2026913 Link 9 |
That's great news, now we need to take our time and get the right management team in place, we need to play more attacking football, play MM in at full forward more, and try and get the lads back who have walked away from the RG setup, Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 2747 - 31/07/2017 20:46:38 2026927 Link 0 |
Great news for Cavan. I think Cavan need to get Rory on board, great experience and has a great set of players to work with in Cavan. foxes_denn (Cavan) - Posts: 129 - 31/07/2017 20:51:34 2026933 Link 0 |
It's a pity it didn't work out better for Rory Gallagher and Donegal but in fairness to him, he gave a lot of effort to Donegal football over the last 6 or 7 seven years. It's one of these awkward breakups where both parties will be relieved that it's over after the dust settles. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 31/07/2017 21:06:43 2026942 Link 0 |
It's not personal but I can't say I'll miss him. Too many quality players were alienated by him due to his ego. This could be a great day for Donegal in the long run. Hopefully all players will feel welcome now and younger players won't be disillusioned with the set up and terrible tactics and style of play. Thanks for the effort but good luck Rory. Its once in a lifetime that you get a player like Michael Murphy and once in a lifetime were you get a manager like Jim McGuinness. If I were Donegal I would do whatever it took to bring McGuinness back to Donegal whatever the cost I think his love for Donegal would make it a hard deal for him to turn it down. You dont want Murphy wasted for another 3 years. There is an opportunity there now and it would be great to see him back in the game. muckla (UK) - Posts: 365 - 31/07/2017 21:17:32 2026955 Link 1 |
I would actually go as far to say if the county board of Donegal had any guts about them at all they would make getting Jim back a priorty. It took 20 years for Donegal to win there 2nd All Ireland so why would you break that formula up. Derry made the same mistake in the 90s by getting rid of Coleman after winning the all ireland. Especially when Murphy is still in his prime.

What are you drinking! Jimmy is supposed to be on 500k in China per year. Who is going to source that kind of cash for the Donegal county board. The options are limited but you would expect McEntee to become available when Roscommon or Kerry finally put the lights out for Mayo. Canavan is an other option. Could Michael Murphy do a Brian mcEniff and become player/manager with Neil Gallagher assisting????

You can't blame Jim for taking the big bucks but would he turn down the chance to manager the team again also? Need a Donegal man to answer this for us. Murphy as play manager is mader then bringing Jim back from China. What are you drinking? muckla (UK) - Posts: 365 - 31/07/2017 21:47:26 2026986 Link 0 |
Rory said that to me in a club match in Antrim one night

Careful what you wish for. Some in galway are talking about getting rid of Walsh, mad stuff. It wasn't Gallagher's fault the donegal defence made two clangers for the second and third galway goals. If they do no better next year will the new man get the same treatment? galwaydublin (Galway) - Posts: 226 - 31/07/2017 22:04:27 2026997 Link 1 |

We can dream but not a hope in hell. There is no doubt Donegal is deep within Jimmy's heart but the timing of this job in China has put paid to any chance of Jimmy coming back anytime soon as I think the season over there is on now the same time as the All Ireland Championship. What the county board should do is approach Jim and ask would he be interested in being part of the recruitment process in a consultancy role but it would be important that this is done privately and not made public. I would say Bonner is the favourite but he would need to have a very strong backroom team with him to make him a viable option. He has been badly caught out with his decision making and tactics on a few occasions with the underage teams. Also those same teams did seem to over rely on the one way of playing which is one of the root problems within Donegal at the moment at all levels. The best candidates are also very unlikely to take the role. James Horan would be a popular choice for alot of Donegal supporters but I cannot see him leaving his media roles or wanting to coach against Mayo when I would say he would want to return to that role in the future. I think Dessie Farrell done an excellent job with the Dublin U-21's this year and he has a Donegal connection on his mothers side but again highly unlikely given his role within Dublin GAA. The job will appeal to alot of managers so the county board need to take their time to ensure they get the right person and don't make a hasty decision like they did last year by giving Rory that contract. Also they need to ensure whoever comes in values and respects their relationship with the management of the underage sides especially the U-20's. Speaking of Rory I have being one of his biggest critics here and not just this year. It all started for me in Croke Park in 2015 after playing Mayo. I just thought there were too many excuses some of which I did not buy. Donegal had become far too one dimensional and this year was a car crash as nobody seemed to know what they were doing and defensively Donegal were a shamble despite having too many bodies back. But at the same time it was brave on his part that he took the job given who was before and it must be said he was very popular with the majority of the players right until the end. I think he has given so much time effort and energy to Donegal GAA over the last few years and for that he is deserves the thanks and gratitude of all Donegal supporters. panamasam (Australia) - Posts: 2782 - 31/07/2017 22:34:36 2027017 Link 1 |
