Ah yes Down thumbing facts. Keep up the good work. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20601 - 18/07/2017 20:14:25 2018902 Link 1 |
We're they really considered such a talented group at the time? Dublin shipped big scores to Tyrone, Kerry and Meath in 08, 09 and 10 all Gilroy did was make Dublin defensively sound by getting the half backs to hold there positions I didn't see it as overly conservative.

Bogue was not a player JMcG took over a panel of players who were at their lowest ebb and within TWO YEARS WERE ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS. As a manager he got the best for the county panel but , and as a proper manager should do if any player overstepped the mark they were gone from the panel I could not care what CR says as I have little time for him or P Curran as I will never forget what PC said about Donegal after the 2011 semi final It nice to see other counties making a breakthrough instead of all this Dublin / Kerry lark Let's face it Tyrone did not get the credit they should have got for their success in 03/05/08. And talking about J McG destroying Gaelic football is complete nonsense SamOnErrigal (Donegal) - Posts: 1427 - 18/07/2017 20:16:00 2018904 Link 0 |
the fact they started each of those 3 matches you mentioned as favourites to win says enough about how talented they were.

Don't understand how you can say that Tyrone didn't get fair credit, they're widely regarded as one of the best teams to have ever played the game with some of the finest individual players of their era...

What about 'puke football'? Not to mention the disparaging comments made by O'Rourke directed against Ryan Mellon and Brian Dooher.

Most people pay little notice to the 'puke football' assertion nowadays and, in my opinion, it would take a long time to find a substantial number of people with memory of anything O'Rourke has ever said.

Charlie's been saying and writing this sort of guff for years.......and no one has taken any heed. Likewise with this. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9706 - 18/07/2017 20:43:30 2018922 Link 0 |
When I was going back to Dublin in 2003 for the AI semi between Armagh and Donegal ( Tyrone already in the final after beating Kerry)a few Kerry lads said to me in London--- I hope ye beat Armagh , otherwise we can play the final in Lansdown road( Tyrone v Armagh) That is what they thought about Tyrone / Armagh And let's face it Donegal got some stick in 2011 but that was put right in 2012 SamOnErrigal (Donegal) - Posts: 1427 - 18/07/2017 20:52:36 2018927 Link 0 |
Aye ,the Kerry lads are well able to give it alright. In fairness there was a fair difference between Donegal in 2011 and 2012. The 2011 version was pretty dour stuff to behold. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 18/07/2017 20:59:05 2018930 Link 0 |

I love the way lads clearly don't have much time for McGuinness so they can't admit that Redmond is a pure mince talker. Bringing up Cassidy again, laughable stuff. Jim got rid of a player who most people in Donegal know was a little big for his boots. Cassidy was a class player but not that well liked off the pitch, that is a fact. And Jim won without him, why people keep bangbig that drum I'll never know. Charlie just wants to be loved by the Dubs and as long as he is looked upon as a darling of the hill he will be happy enough. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7907 - 18/07/2017 21:21:39 2018943 Link 6 |
mcguiness the pundit is poor?..would have to strongly disagree with you there, decent footballer too, charlie great player but his comments were silly

we were fairly conservative alright, look at our displays v teams in leinster especially who were inferior to us, compared to now how we are under gavin blowing teams out of it on a consistent basis,,it was necessary though for the time and have no issue with the style we played

we were pretty defensive under gilroy though in fairness look at the wexford series of games for instance, a team we should have been blowing away, gavin has taken it to another level though yes and weve become a really balanced side since the donegal defeat

McGuinness is excellent pundit and his Irish Times column also very good. Charlie literally adds nothing of value on paper or on the radio. He is probably just trying to get a nixer somewhere by being controversial.

I will always respect Charlie the player, never read much that had me over doing the auld grey matter. Regards mcguinness for me I understand in a county were all Ireland's are few and far between why the locals see Jesus The rest of us see a one trick pony a brilliant successful pony , it didn't hang around long enough to show there was more substance , Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 18/07/2017 22:56:46 2018990 Link 0 |
Have to agree. Charlie's record hasn't changed in 20 years "Dublin yeee knooow....yak yak whaffle whaffle......Dublin....yee know.....repeat 20 times".
