Mayo v Cork

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just looking at distance per miles to Limerick, Cork city to Limerick 65 miles, Limerick to Galway 65 miles, Castlebar to Galway is 1 hour, Belmullet or Ballina 2 hours from Galway. North Mayo is roughly the same distance from Limerick as Sligo are and Sligo to Limerick is 144 miles, big difference between Cork and their 65 miles to Limerick and most of Mayo nearly 140 miles to Limerick. GAA definitely is GRAB ALL ASSOCIATION

Replying To riverboys:  "Heard the game is in Limerick, great to see the GAA being neutral, what map are they looking at to see that Limerick is halfway between Cork and Mayo, it will take over 4 hours for people in north Mayo to get to Limerick, most in Cork won't even decide whether to go to the game or not until an hour or 2 before the throw in, Mayo co board should grow a pair and demand a change of venue for example Ennis, Cork don't have a history of travelling for away matches unless it's a final in large numbers so majority of the crowd would be Mayo supporters and Ennis coped well with the crowd last Saturday. Thankfully I still have my opt out option and will use it for this fixture, I and a fair few in my area won't be crossing south of the Shannon for this game"
Limerick is equidistant between Ballinrobe and Cork. Not really much point to your argument there. Limerick favors Cork supporters slightly over Mayo but it's not that much of a difference. It's a 3.5 hour driver from Mizen Head (West Cork) to Limerick. Similar time from Belmullet to Limerick

It's 1 hour 30 mins from Ballinrobe to Belmullet, and 2 hours to Blackwood and anywhere along the north Mayo coastline is 90 mins from Ballinrobe so Limerick isn't a neutral venue, Ennis is more neutral, the GAA expect Mayo supporters to travel in their thousands to Limerick, if they want to fine but thankfully I won't be one of them, the Mayo co board let us down for the semi final replay v Kerry but they few euro compensation kept them quiet, the GAA shafted us in the past and are doing so again and the Mayo co board will keep quiet again, it's high time Mayo supporters got some respect and boycott a game or 2 but they won't do that so time and time again we will be trampled on

@Riverboys - It's 1.5 hours from many parts of West Cork to Cork City so I still don't see your logic. Limerick slightly favors Cork but it's nothing worth shouting about.

Ennis would have made for a better atmosphere with a full house. The Gaelic Grounds holds 40k? Mayo might bring around 10k and Cork 2K ? Will look awful sparse on TV and will have a poor atmosphere.

Mayo by a few points, fitness will get them through even if they are struggling.

They might do a double header with the Kerry juniors and Leitrim juniors in the allireland junior semifinal.

Yeah Ennis was possibly a better venue, but not a huge distance from Ennis to Limerick and as some other posters noted, it is a long distance from West Cork to Limerick too.

Also Limerick had to play Mayo in Roscommon at the same stage a number of years back, hardly neutral or equidistant.
Tipp were also shafted last year when they had to play Derry in Cavan, so when you compare it to those, it isn't that bad !

Wasn't so long ago there would have been huge anticipation for this fixture. But will the hurlers inspire Cork or like someone else said, most of the Cork people will be getting swept away by the rising of the hurling tide, and therefore leaving the footballers with poor crowds and in turn knocking the inspiration out of the big ballers.
It'll come down to the character of this Cork team to determine whether this game will be one way traffic or a good old down to the wire classic, Mayo to prevail.

Where's the place in cork that halfway of your journey to Dublin is still in cork??

Ah here calm down, yes we all know it is the grab all association but your attitude is not attitude to have. Play the opponent anytime anywhere!

Cork can be dangerous opponents and their pride will be hurt especially with those Kerry lads giving them dogs abuse in the papers. Our lads will be wise not to take anything for granted but then again I don't expect they will. A wounded Cork could be a dangerous animal and they are a proud county!

End of the day neither team is setting the world alight, if the cork management are up to speed they could set up their team bring a surprise result. no surprise if we are favourites for the clash but even if cork have been dire with the way Mayo have played there's every chance of an upset. Suppose as usual it's what Mayo turn up but I think I know which one will. We are going to have to put in more competent performances of we are to keep going.

Pre 2011 Mayo had not beaten Cork in Champioship in over 90 years.
Mayo took a few bearings from the revels down the years especially that infamous 1993 semi final. Hoping we can continue our winning steak against them. Very lucky in 2014 against them when we done our usual stop playing when winning easily.

its not quite half but Castletownbere to Mitchelstown is 170km while Castletownbere to Dublin is 380km. Gary Murphy, current Cork panelist, and other former players like Ciaran O'Sullivan, Brendan Ger and Kevin Ger O'Sullivan, Ollie O'Sullivan, Donagh Wiseman are from back there and do make the journey.

It's 29km further to the gaelic grounds than it would be going to cusack park, from the mayo side. That's 15 minutes on the motorway. Are we really moaning over this

I think we should be looking at this as an opportunity to bury the bad juju left over from 2014, quite frankly.

Dublin?
Mizen Head (West Cork) is 3.5 hours from Limerick was my point.
With all these lads complaining about the distance from Mayo to Limerick we might get through Clarinbridge a bit handier this time around ;-)
