Home Games for Leinster Champions?

(Oldest Posts First)

Our eighth year in Leinster, and our second title. Galway are now the only Provincial Champion to get no home games. Is this really the best the GAA can do to encourage and grow the sport? Time for counties to let go of their petty insularity and do the right thing both for Galway and, more importantly, hurling.

Home Games for the Tribesmen in '18!

Well the new proposals aim to give Galway home championship games.

It's your ninth year in Leinster. I don't think Galway are the only provincial champion to get no championship home games. I don't remember Clare or Waterford getting many or any championship home games in the last twenty years. Galway wanted to be in Leinster to get more competitive games before all Ireland series. That's what they're getting now. They were getting plenty of home games in the past playing Roscommon and then straight into a semi final. Is that what ye want to go back to? It's enough that the Leinster council have facilitated a lot of non Leinster counties into their provincial championship (Galway, Antrim, London, Kerry). I think they are being very open and progressive. But staging Leinster games outside Leinster is a step too far.

How is wanting home games the same as going back to playing Roscommon and then the semi?
And Leinster games have already been played outside of Leinster in Kerry and Antrim while Ulster football finals have been played in Leinster.
Galways request to have H&A agreements is very reasonable.

Something deeply ironic in the idea that Galway getting a home game is 'going too far' given the unprecedented level of spending the GAA has invested to make Dublin hurling competitive.

Also seems like an inconsistent application of logic showing acceptance of Bob's new home being west of the Shannon, but God forbid ye might have to play a game there. I say, if ye want Bob back, come and get him!

Fair play to that Wexford lad, who I suspect represents the majority view. Sure who wouldn't want a day out in Salthill in the summer?

Cusack Park and Walsh Park aren't really fit to host Munster championship hurling. Pearse Stadium is fit to host Leinster championship hurling.

Totally agree. I think Galway are entitled to home games. They've rescued a dying province. I think Galway should dominate Leinster now for a few years.

I'm wasn't questioning the fitness of Cusack Park or Walsh Park to hold Munster championship. I was merely pointing out the original poster's incorrect statement that Galway were the only provincial champion not to get a home game.

Galway are more than entitled to host games in the Leinster Championship and should have been entitled from day one, your either part of the Leinster Championship or not and if your part of it then your entitled to host games end of story, this muck of having to play Leinster games in Leinster is nonsensical and belittles Galway and the improvement they have brought to that championship.

Ultimately, teams say Croke Park is an advantage to the Dublin footballers, and many fans on here tend to moan year in and year out about Dublin playing their games at HQ. Dublin footballers are sent to Croke Park for financial reasons.

If Croke Park and familiarity is a reason the Dubs have been successful, there is no reason for Galway to seek games outside of HQ. The more they play there the more used they get to the routine, the pitch etc.

Could be a HUGE advantage so us Dubs are told.

Akin to getting an invite from your neighbours to come round for dinner some evening and join them in a few games of gin rummy. They think you're a bit exotic and would brighten up what's become a drab social event for them otherwise. So you say 'Sure, we'd enjoy that we'll bring the kids with us'. At which stage they shuffle their feet awkwardly and tell you, '...ummm...about that. We would rather ye didn't. Your kids are more advanced than ours and it wouldn't be good for our little darlings development. Oh and there's no need to invite us to yours in return as we're home birds really and we hear it rains a lot that side of the river'

Its hard to se how Galway have "rescued a dying province".

In the nine seasons since they've joined, they've won two titles to Kilkenny's six. Their record is:

Vs. Kilkenny P6 W1 L5
Vs. Dublin P4 W2 L2
Vs. Wexford P2 W2 L2

Not bad but they've hardly turned the whole province on its head.

Apologies. Should read:

Vs. Wexford P2 W2 L0
