Brian Dooher is a vet.

Sean Cavanagh is an accountant. Not sure how true it is but I hear he graduated fairly young with great grades? A great captain to use these skills making decisions on his feet to get his team's maximum returns!

Nowadays anyone who isn't a teacher, garda, army, farmer, student or sales rep is "unconventional".

Replying To yew_tree:  "Are there any intercounty doctors right now? I woud be surprised if there was given the demands of both jobs.

Dr Pádraig Carney (aka The Flying Doctor) was a 2 time All Ireland winner with Mayo and one of a great GAA players. His move to America was a great loss for Mayo but he was flown back by the Mayo CB for the1954 league semi v Dublin.

He had to leave Idlewild Airport in New York (now JFK) on the Friday evening, with a stop in Gander, Newfoundland, for refuelling on the then almost twelve hour flight to Shannon, before going on to Dublin. After the game, he had to fly back to New York for work on Tuesday morning.

He was the first footballer to be flown from the USA for a game and became known as "the flying doctor". Carney captained Mayo to a magnificent 0-11 to 0-7 victory over Dublin.

He was again flown home for the 1954 league final in which he captained Mayo to defeat Carlow by 2-10 to 0-3. It was his last competitive game for Mayo on Irish soil. One can really reflect on his amazing achievements when it is appreciated that he played his last game for Mayo in the Polo Grounds, New York, in October 1954 at the age of twenty-six!

Mayo officials believed that they could win the 1954 Connacht championship without Pádraig Carney and had arranged to bring him home for the All-Ireland semi-final and final (such faith!). However, Galway and a brilliant Seán Purcell had other ideas and exploded the Mayo dream by defeating them in the Connacht championship."
Typical way Mayo officials have had their heads in the cloud since 1951.

Ciaran McDonald was laying pipes all over Ireland in his hay day. There's a lot of bank officials in the gaa I heard a story of someone asking mac why he wasn't working in a bank or an office while he plays for mayo and was purported to have responded that he would be able to tell you to fupp off! That's the clean version.

Compare to most county teams it is, out of kilkennys starting 15 for the 2014 all Ireland, 6 worked in sales, 3 teachers, 3 in the army and 3 students.

Physios do alot of work in the evening and at weekends with teams so it probably isn't very appealing to county players.
