Report in the Irish News this morning that Croke Park is finally to act and rubber stamp a financial plan to rejuvenate Gaelic Games in Belfast. The GAA have finally got the message that Gaelic Games are in a dire way and that a plan is now required to deal with this. As a Belfast and Antrim man I welcome this long overdue action. My main concern now will be tbe nasty begrudgery and jealousy that will come our way from within Ulster especially from Tyrone. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9719 - 15/06/2017 17:30:59 2000051 Link 0 |
Don't worry about us lad, as the pioneering Club Tyrone & Garvaghey Patrons show we have no bother raising funds and being self sufficient. As a northern nationalist / republican I'd welcome an investment into trying to create a strong GAA set up in Belfast - just hope you lot don't squander all that money, which going by the past record of your Co. Board sadly seems a strong possibility.

Self sufficient? That's because there's only about 20 families in Tyrone and you all own big farms?

Why did you have to add that negative little bit at the end? Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4247 - 15/06/2017 18:26:57 2000067 Link 2 |
Aye, we will be furious with jealousy in Tyrone. Envious of all your shiny new gym equipment/ nutritionists and white board markers. There will be uprisings in Omagh. Young men crying in raged at their parents letting them be born in such a place. County and ex players burning their All-Ireland and Ulster medals wishing they could play in the new holy land of the GAA. I'm already swooned in jealousy at the thoughts. Gurrrr. Lol. Relax. Yous aren't getting money for the transfer window or anything. GameOfTyrones (Tyrone) - Posts: 469 - 15/06/2017 18:43:28 2000074 Link 0 |
Is that directed at me or the other guy?

Not from Belfast so I could begrudge but I am delighted at this news. Naysayer (Antrim) - Posts: 2071 - 15/06/2017 18:57:59 2000078 Link 0 |
Fair question. Sounds like there's baggage there alright. It would be great for Antrim if they could get their act together and with some decent backing raise the profile of Gaelic Games in the county. There always seems to be infighting though and it would be worth it to get their house in order in that respect before blaming others. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 15/06/2017 19:00:29 2000080 Link 0 |

when they sort out the inter club rivalry and poaching of the better player to play for the bigger clubs, maybe they might be able to start working on the promotion of gaelic games in the city. Clubs from tyrone Armagh etc playing in the antrim leagues know well what the problems are as they are hearing it week in week out from the clubs themselves, yet you have posters on here who would beny there is any animosity amongst teams bulmccabe (Tyrone) - Posts: 361 - 15/06/2017 20:31:15 2000115 Link 0 |
Good news. It's vital for the GAA as a whole to be strong in the second city. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13725 - 16/06/2017 08:24:58 2000205 Link 0 |
I hope Croke Park don't forget that there's a sizeable chunk of Belfast in Down like the Ulster Council have when they allocated out their hurling coaches who's seldom seen south of the Lagan..... bricktop (Down) - Posts: 2503 - 16/06/2017 08:55:35 2000215 Link 0 |
Listen I am all for needing a strong Antrim. But if this plan is for the GAA to hand a pile of money over to Antrim GAA to follow a plan they are nuts. I am recently involved in Antrim GAA and its a mess. redhanddefender (Tyrone) - Posts: 913 - 16/06/2017 09:31:16 2000219 Link 0 |
I didn't even read the first message in this and dig at tyrone. Tyrone have constantly reached out to counties in Ulster and beyond including Antrim to help them out in learning to become self sufficient. We have always opened our doors. Until antrim learn to do that the money will be a compete waste. redhanddefender (Tyrone) - Posts: 913 - 16/06/2017 09:35:44 2000221 Link 0 |

Should maybe have employed Bricktop and redhanddefender instead of looking for all this cash as they seem to know the ins and outs of Belfast GAA better than anyone :) Naysayer (Antrim) - Posts: 2071 - 16/06/2017 09:54:31 2000228 Link 0 |

Whatever our problems I would definitely not say that there's no club spirit in Belfast. We struggle maybe to get the numbers we should and I think our links with schools aren't strong enough but there's plenty of club spirit. Some of the small clubs struggle and lose some better players to Galls and the like. It happens in Dublin and Meath too. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4247 - 16/06/2017 10:10:34 2000233 Link 0 |
All accommodated in Antrim hurling, in some cases to the expense of Antrim teams playing at a higher division but to the greater good of Ulster hurling? Am I close? Naysayer (Antrim) - Posts: 2071 - 16/06/2017 10:17:47 2000238 Link 1 |
In fact some of those clubs mentioned have done rather well on their own without entering Antrim competition at senior level so could it be they get their grounding at youth levels in Antrim hurling or am I away off on the wrong direction completely?
